Message from the President
|
Hello Gentlemen, and let me be the first to welcome you to the 2022 golf season.
I'm writing this to you while currently on a plane to Florida to attend The Players Championship and to get a few practice rounds in at the beautiful courses this state has to offer. Finally getting to travel shows me that things are slowly getting back to normal; keep your fingers crossed that we can have an uninterrupted golf season.
Speaking of things getting back to normal, 18 should be back open this spring and there is no work slated for the course this year. It will be nice to play the old girl how it was intended to be played. The teeth will be back in the 3 hardest finishing holes around.
Now it's time to give you some updates for the season.
If you haven't already checked out our new website, I encourage you to do so. Reed and Chris did an awesome job building it out. It's mobile friendly and looks very sharp.
For the away tournament, we are headed back to a track we previously visited. I enjoyed my round there last time and I'm interested to see how the course has matured over the years. I'll let Lincoln and Doug fill you in on the details.
The city is continuing the process of exploring privatization options for city courses. I can assure you that all the leagues are against this and we have all been actively trying to sway the vote by contacting our city councillors. The more voices we have on this the better, so I encourage each of you to write the councillors and let them know your opinion.
That's all for now. I look forward to seeing you all at the meet and greet.

Greetings fellow Vic Men's Golf Club members!
For your reference, we have attached a copy of our annual Financial Statement of Operations, dated Sept 17, 2021.
The statement was presented for review and unanimously approved at the 2021 AGM. Chris Suvan, our Victoria Men's Golf Club auditor, also tabled a separate auditor's report at the AGM attesting to the accuracy of the financial results as evidenced in the supporting records and reported in the Statement of Operations. Due to our healthy bank balance, we were able to lower fees by $25 for all returning members in 2021. Reported results for the year showed a small deficit of $1,729 and a year end Cash balance of $12,572.
As treasurer, I also provide an updated financial report for review purposes at every Executive committee meeting throughout the year. We continue to process 99% of our transactions electronically using e-transfers for both revenues and expenditures in 2021 as well as 2022. We have recently implemented the use of a Business Visa card for our Men's Club in order to pay for registration fees for various software and website requirements.
In my opinion, we are in an excellent financial position to deal with any operational requirements for the 2022 golf season. So continue to swing away with financial confidence, and let..er..rip this season!
Cheers!
Gerry O'Donnell
Treasurer,
B Comm, CPA, CGA

Hey Everyone,
I have held almost every role possible in the golf industry but to be your Club Captain is my biggest honour.
I hope everyone is excited for the upcoming season, I certainly know I am for many reasons. One of those reasons is the introduction of the Captain’s Games that I plan on hosting the last Wednesday of every month. These will run parallel to our typical stroke play (provided no tournaments are running that night), so if you’re interested, great, no pressure to participate though.
Our first event will be The Victoria Three Club Challenge, so start thinking of your set-up.
We play at the Local Muni, so let’s get out there and have some fun!
I look forward to spilling a few drinks with all of you soon,
Jordan Thachuk

Welcome to the Victoria Men’s Golf Club for the 2022 season!
After what seems like an eternity of starts, stops and Covid restrictions, it is looking like we will be getting back to a normal routine of good, bad and ugly golf shots.
Traditional hole prizes and flight prizes will be back in place every Wednesday.
Wednesday Men’s Club will run from May 4th until September 28th.
Remember, if the course is open, we are playing, rain or shine.
For me, this will be my 12th year with the club and 5th year as the Wednesday Night Chair.
My role is to make sure that Wednesdays run smoothly and to have your experience with our club be an enjoyable one. My goal is always to exceed your expectations and to have your experience with our club be welcoming, all-inclusive and long lasting.
I hope you all have a fun and enjoyable season, as well as play some good competitive golf.
I look forward to meeting all our new members and re-connecting with our returning ones.
Play well, have fun!
Mike Pickard

Hi everyone, I will again be heading up the singles and doubles match play tournaments for friendly competition against fellow club members. Here are the highlights for this year:
- These tournaments are optional
- Handicaps are used to ensure competitive play among different skill levels
- Tournaments start near the beginning of the season and will see half the field eliminated each round until winners are declared near the end of the season
- Participants schedule their matches with their opponents during regular Wednesday play or any other time as long as it’s before the allotted deadline for each round
- Champions get their names on the hardware
- Cash for all those making it to the final rounds
- Early or later tee time preferences on sign-up to get early matches played near your preferred availability
- Deadlines are strictly adhered to
- Singles and doubles deadline dates are staggered as to not conflict with each other for those playing in both tournaments
- Optional celebrations and condolences following the round upstairs in the clubhouse
Sign-up and further detailed information will be communicated as we start the season.
Play well!
Allan Nalli

What is a handicap?
Handicapping enables golfers across different skill levels to compete equitably.
At Victoria Men’s Club, we use the handicap index to determine the course handicap when competing on Wednesday night tournaments or weekend tournaments.
On your Victoria scorecard you are required to enter your course handicap (e.g. 16) not your handicap index 21.9 (the index is used to determine your course handicap on any course with a slope and rating), and your full name on the scorecard to be eligible for Wednesday night and weekend competition. NOTE: course handicap is always a whole number (no decimals).
|
|
In 2020 the Golf Canada has adopted the World Handicap System (WHS). Here are some highlights:
- Handicap Index will be based on the lowest 8 of the most recent 20 rounds
- A limit of Net Double Bogey on the maximum hole score (for handicapping purposes)
- A calculation considers the impact that playing conditions (including course set up and weather conditions) might have on a player’s performance each day (that is why it is recommended you enter your scores on the day of play and before midnight local time – this ensures your score is included in the analysis for the Playing Conditions Calculation – PCC)
To avoid any confusion with the revised handicap rules for the WHS, it is advised to enter your hole by hole scores on the date played on the Golf Canada website to ensure your handicap is calculated correctly.
Hole by hole scores, entered on the Golf Canada website, is also required to ensure your eligibility in the VMGC ringer board competition.
Sample question: How do I post a score for a hole with a temporary green?
Answer: If the hole’s character and playing length have not been altered and you can play hole under the Rules of Golf, then you can post your actual score on the hole. Otherwise, you must post a Net Par for the hole.
Or if you have specific questions, you can ask an expert:

A big welcome to all new and returning members!
Another exciting season of weekend tournament offerings are scheduled for your enjoyment. Tournaments are held primarily on Saturday mornings with 7:30 AM starts. We hope you will register for many of these tournaments and have fun with the different formats, which varies between individual and 2 or 4-man team play. All registration fees collected go towards prizes for that specific tournament.
For newer members, don't feel inhibited to register. It is a great way to meet and play with different club members - building friendships, learning rules, and gaining tips on golf etiquette & technique. As always, tournament registration fees are low and there are many perks (e.g. a meal or food vouchers, sponsor door prize draws, hole prizes, trophy winner(s) and often top 1-3 placement proshop vouchers or cash awards).
Weekend tournaments create an environment that encourages friendly competition and playful banter. This also allows members to get to know each other by gathering after their round to enjoy the camaraderie over food & drinks. Please stay after your round as tournament prize winners will be announced and trophies presented. Each tournament trophy is unique and the winner(s) will have their picture taken for our website and other social media.
Please see the list of 2022 tournaments below.
This year, we have a dedicated promotions/marketing/sponsorship team who will endeavour to provide more and better prizing for our tournaments to increase excitement & value. Door prizes may be drawn but you must be present to win.
Looking forward to meeting everyone, sharing some good times and having a great & memorable year of golf!

Doug Krystofiak – Assistant Tournament/Weekend Chair

SYC Brewing Co
At SYC Brewing we have made every single beer on the same belief; that a beer should be more than just a combination of ingredients. Above all, a beer should be absolutely tasteful, familiar, and magical to drink. Our creations use fundamental basic honed through millennial, using just the same four ingredients. However, we have adjusted and fine-tuned our ratios to create something of our own unique experience.
We took a big leap when we started SYC (Show Your Craft) Brewing. We wanted to make beer for the believers and the give a try-ers. For those who are not scared to show who they truly are.

The Home You’ve Been Dreaming Of
If you’re going to invest your time and money in building a home, it should be with someone who cares about its success as much as you do.
Haynes Homes has been developing homes since 2015 in the Edmonton area with some of the cities best suppliers, designers and trades people. We have worked with a lot of Edmontonians to build their dream home, and we understand the trust and responsibility that comes along with it. No one should feel like they’re gambling with their future, which is why we have an open-book policy, and scheduled meetings every step of the way.
When you choose Haynes home you avoid costly mistakes, long build times and unexpected bills.
