June 6, 2025 marks the 81st anniversary of D-Day, the historic World War II invasion of Normandy in 1944. It was a pivotal moment in the conflict and a potent reminder of the valor and selflessness of all who fought for freedom.
We honor the courage and sacrifice of everyone who served, including the women who helped through aviation, support, intelligence, and medical work. Their efforts made a big impact and continue to inspire us today.

On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion (CPDB) was honored with the highest civilian award in the United States when they received a Congressional Gold Medal for their service in WWII. The ceremony, which took place at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center in Emancipation Hall, was attended by over 300 descendants of the women of the 6888th CPDB, while the two surviving women of the black female unit watched the ceremony virtually from home. On hand to receive the medal were Stanley Earley and Judith Earley, the children of Unit Commander Lt. Col. Charity Adams Earley.
AWF Board Member, Col (Ret.) Edna Cummings, advocated tirelessly for the unit to receive this long overdue recognition, and was also a speaker at the ceremony. Click this link for more details and photos, and watch the ceremony here.

The date is not recognized nationally, but is recognized by a number of states, either through legislation or proclamation, and organizations. The stated goal of Women Veterans Day varies somewhat by state, but can generally be acknowledged as an effort to honor the work of women in the United States Armed Forces and recognize the unique challenges that they have faced. The date was first recognized when the New York State Assembly declared June 12, 2008 to be Women Veterans Recognition Day. | | Becoming A Veteran: A Guide to Embracing Your Veteran Identity is a powerful, practical guide for all who have worn the uniform, regardless of when or how they served. Written by retired Air Force veteran, Lisa Ducharme, the book draws on decades of lived experience and heartfelt outreach, and uses honest storytelling and practical wisdom that helps veterans move beyond transitioning to embracing their veteran identity. | | Celebrated annually on June 14, Flag Day honors the United States flag's adoption in 1777 and serves as a reminder of the pride, solidarity, and principles that the flag stands for: liberty, freedom, and the tenacity of our country. The flag is a powerful symbol of our common history and patriotism, whether it is flown from residences, places of business, or during public gatherings. | | Father's Day - celebrated every year on the third Sunday of June - is a special time to celebrate fathers and other paternal figures who play an important part in our lives by providing wisdom, hard work, or just by being there. Fathers play a key role in shaping families and strengthening communities. | | (Photo: Bowman Medical Group) | | |
PTSD Awareness Day, observed on June 27, is a day devoted to raising awareness of PTSD and providing support to those impacted by the condition. Anybody who has gone through trauma can be affected by PTSD, a mental health illness that affects many veterans and active military personnel. It's critical to identify the warning signs, which include anxiety, emotional distress, and flashbacks, and to provide support to those who might be experiencing difficulties.
On this day, please be encouraged to learn about PTSD, show empathy for those who are impacted, and work to lessen the stigma associated with mental health. If you or someone you know is dealing with PTSD, please know that recovery is possible and support is available.
