Today, on January 15, 2024, we remember and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s lifetime commitment to equality, justice, and civil rights for all people and carry forward the enduring theme: "Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not A Day Off!"
Today commemorates the 60th anniversary of Dr. King receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for his pursuit of civil rights and social justice. In 1964, Dr. King advocated for nonviolent resistance to overcome injustice as a means of lifting racial oppression. He created change with organized sit-ins, marches, and peaceful demonstrations that highlighted issues of inequality. On April 4, 1968, at the age of 39, he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a march in support of striking sanitation workers.
We remember Dr. King as a husband, father, friend, and fierce advocate for the betterment of all people. We celebrate his legacy by building upon the contributions he made to impact civil rights. We act in his memory by organizing, volunteering, and making it "a Day On and Not a Day Off."
