Flockers, this week we've added two new sections, Local Adventurers, where we'll follow the travels of fellow flockers, and NextGen,where we'll feature up-and-comers of the next generation.
LOCAL ADVENTURERS: Dr. Gulshan Sethi?
A few weeks ago, I ran into a good friend, Dr. Gulshan Sethi, who was preparing to embark on an Indian pilgrimage. He extracted a pinky shake promise from me. That promise was that I would keep the Flock updated on his whereabouts while on his long-awaited pilgrimage, and that I would not miss a beat. So, presented below is a photographic journey of where our very special friend, Dr.Gulshan has been; and, we will continue to report on his pilgrimage in the coming weeks. Kindly keep him and his wife Neelam in your thoughts and watch the Flock for updates each week.

THE NEXT GEN: Our Favorite Up-And-Comers
|
I don't worry about the future when I think about some of the wonderful young talent, we have emerging around us.
I have known this young man working in the field of journalism for years. William Scott George is the natural son of my celestial New England brother and The Flock's favorite still life and floral artist, Cita Scott.
| |
Here's how the modest young William describes what he does, 'I'm not technically a journalist. I run the trade data research team at Import Genius, a company which maintains a database of customs records for a number of countries including the US, Russia, Ukraine, and Venezuela. We work closely with journalists to help them tell stories about or informed by our trade data. In addition to providing assistance to journalists who have requests for us, we also perform our own research and offer stories to journalists of our own accord."
Another one is a wonderful photographer who also did the swim leg for my recent triathlon team We Tri 2 at the Lavaman, Giuseppe DeMasi. He has built an impressive portfolio including big wave photography from the North Shore of Oahu to the high peaks of the Alps.
|
Ciao! My name is Giuseppe DeMasi and I'm the owner of DeMasi Photography. I am an Academy of Science nominated, award winning, and internationally published photographer based in my hometown of Tucson, Arizona.
I've been a professional photographer for the better part of a decade and my camera has brought me all over the world, from the clear blue waters of Hawaii to the breathtaking heights of the Alps - and countless places in between.

Then there is my daughter, Violet. She's a very talented artist and a wonderful event promoter. Along with all this, she's also an amazing muralist.
I was born in Hawaii raised in southern Arizona by a village of wonderful, loving, driven beings & aweing environments. My family instilled mindful, open-hearted, appreciative values in me that I feel made it my nature to be creative. I grew up around beautiful works of art from ancient artifacts to contemporary performance. From papyrus painting and raku pinch pots in elementary school to art history and foundations in high school, art has always been an important point of connection within myself, my surroundings & humanity.
BACKYARD FARMING:Quiet Chicken Breeds
When I was young, one of my greatest joys was watching chicken eggs hatch on the family farm. What did we do? We gathered the eggs from the chicken coop, put them in an incubator and after a few weeks, we got little baby chicks. Keeping a backyard chicken coop has become a popular hobby in suburban, and even urban settings. One drawback to this hobby is that chickens, especially roosters can be noisy. But there is good news! There are breeds of quiet chickens, even roosters. Below you'll see some of the best breeds to raise at home without waking the neighbors.
The Quietest Chicken Breeds For Every Purpose
Is there such a thing as the quietest chicken breed? Well, some breeds aren’t as chatty as others, but in truth, there aren’t any completely quiet chicken breeds. In this article, I’ll identify the chicken breeds that are the quietest within their category. Then, we’ll touch on a few things you can do to keep the chickens you have quiet(er). Your neighbors will be grateful, and you’ll enjoy just a little more peace and quiet than you did before.
RELIGION: Spring Holy Days
It is Spring, and three of the world's major religions are celebrating Holy Days. In Christianity, Holy Week started April 2 on Palm Sunday and ends April 9 on Easter. In Judaism Passover started on the evening of April 5 and ends on the evening of April 13. In Islam Ramadan started the evening of March 22 and ends on the evening of April 20.
When Is Easter 2023? | How Is Easter's Date Determined? | From: Almanac, By: Catherine Boeckmann, April 2, 2023 | Easter 2023 will be observed on Sunday, April 9. The most important Christian holiday, Easter is a “movable feast.” Why does it change every year? What are the commonest and rarest Easter dates? How is the date determined? Easter Sunday always occurs on the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon. What is the Paschal Full Moon? This is specifically the first Sunday following the full Moon that occurs on or after the March or spring equinox.
Learn About the History of Passover and Its Traditions
From: Almanac, By:Almanac editors, March 28, 2023
The holiday of Pesach, or Passover, is an annual weeklong festival commemorating the emancipation of Jewish peoples from slavery (in ancient Egypt). The Hebrew name, Pesach, means “to passover” because the plague in Egypt that killed all first-borns passed over the Israelites’ homes, sparing the lives of their children.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. A foundational pillar of practicing Islam is fasting during the month of Ramadan. This devotional act is observed by over a billion Muslims worldwide today. Fasting is a major act of worship, and it is a powerful means of cultivating God-consciousness in the heart and mind. Fasting has both physical and spiritual benefits, including purifying the soul, inspiring self-reflection, and increasing empathy and good works.

LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Steven Wool, MD
|
I'd like to give a nod to Steven Wool, cyclist and likely one of Tucson’s best internists, specializing in general and geriatric medicine. He is accessible in a heartbeat, and with the help of his sage team of like-minded care specialists he can comfort the minds of the young and old. In a phrase, he’s just an old fashion kind of Doc.
P.S. he also collects vintage medical toys such as stethoscopes, wild west posters and more.
