Magritte, René. Man With Bowler Hat and Dove.
I was going to cover the life and times of Pablo Picasso this week, but instead I decided to bump him in favor of the Belgian Surrealist René Magritte. I do love his work and his exploration of negative space and perception. One of my favorites is the above print that sits in my living room. I wish I had the original, but I only have one of the copies.

René Magritte
René Magritte was a Belgian surrealist artist best known for his witty and thought-provoking images and his use of simple graphics and everyday imagery.

|
Who Was René Magritte?
René Magritte was a Belgian-born artist who was known for his work with surrealism as well as his thought-provoking images. After attending art school in Brussels, he worked in commercial advertising to support himself while he experimented with his painting.
| |
With a popularity that increased over time, Magritte was able to pursue his art full-time and was celebrated in several international exhibitions. He experimented with numerous styles and forms during his life and was a primary influence on the pop art movement.

A black hole devoured a star and created a Solar System-sized donut
New Hubble Space Telescope readings show the last moments of a star before it's devoured by a black hole.
| |
Astronomers used NASA's iconic Hubble Space Telescope to record detailed observations of a star's final moments before it was torn apart by a black hole. The violent encounter, also known as a "tidal disruption event," both pulls in material from the star and also shoots radiation out into the cosmos. In the process, a massive donut-shaped gas cloud is formed.

Star survives spaghettification by black hole
A star has survived a close encounter with a black hole, but the black hole has been able to sneak a second bite.
| |
From: Space.com, By: Keith Cooper, January 19, 2023
A captured star has experienced multiple close encounters with a supermassive black hole in a distant galaxy — and possibly even survived having material ripped away by immense gravitational tidal forces. The destruction of a star by the gravitational forces of a supermassive black hole is a violent affair known as a tidal disruption event (TDE). Gas is torn from the star and undergoes "spaghettification," in which it is shredded and stretched into streams of hot material that flow around the black hole, forming a temporary and very bright accretion disk. From our point of view, the center of the galaxy housing the supermassive black hole seems to flare.
You have one last chance to view the green comet this week, thanks to a close flyby with Mars
The green comet C/2022 E3, last seen 50,000 years ago, will zoom past Mars this week. This could be humanity’s last chance to see the comet up close. A rare green comet zipping by Earth for the first time since the Stone Age is about to pass right next to Mars this week, and the once-in-a-lifetime cosmic pairing could be visible through a simple pair of binoculars.
Last Sunday saw the appearance of the "Snow Moon", February's full moon. We had an amazing cloud cover here in Tucson. As I looked to the east, this is what was presented from my back yard.

This is a suggestion from a Flock reader, Ivan Michael Kasser, my loving husband. He saw a story on Lego in the New York Times and this particular writer was giving accolades to the longevity of Lego and the lessons it teaches children in construction and engineering.
