Elegant Blackbird

I just can't get this picture out of my head, so I'm starting with it this week. If you remember, I ended with it last week. Blackbird teaches you how to reveal hidden truths while embracing tremendous transformation.

Types of Blackbirds

As you know, there are many types of blackbirds. I have chosen an article that describes five. Hit the button below to learn more. When I was a child, the red winged blackbird was my favorite. When I’d look out our kitchen window toward the flowering white double and triple lilac trees, the red winged blackbird stood out beautifully. When I noticed the red winged blackbird sitting on a branch, I felt my schooldays would go well, and it usually did.

GETTING BACK TO SPACE:

What's Going on with the Hubble Space Telescope?

As you know, in the new year we were going to focus on space. Some of you may remember when the Hubble launched in 1990. I was in my 40s, and now 33 years later I'm checking in. When you have time, I encourage you to read more.

In 2013, deputy project manager James Jeletic projected that Hubble could survive into the 2020s. Based on solar activity and atmospheric drag, or lack thereof, a natural atmospheric reentry for Hubble will occur between 2028 and 2040. In June 2016, NASA extended the service contract for Hubble until June 2021. In November 2021, NASA extended the service contract for Hubble until June 2026.

BLACK HEROES: Preserving Black History

National Park Service African American

Heritage Sites

In the mid-70s I took a pickup trip with a camper poised on the back. It had a bed, and room for my cooler. I proceeded to travel up to Canada and across the upper boundaries of the Great Lakes on the north side before dipping down into Michigan and then north through the states of Washington and Oregon and down Route 1 to Yosemite. Along the way, I was able to visit several African American Heritage Sites, many of which are reminders of the important role African Americans played in settling and claiming the lands west of the Mississippi. Whether east or east of the Mississippi, there are many African American heritage sites to visit.

There are so many to choose from. Just hit the button below to take you all around the country– north, south, east, and west. I’ve been to many but certainly not all, and the ones I’ve seen are certainly worth visiting.

America's national parks weave together a mosaic of African American history. A large patchwork of National Park Service sites were founded because of their pivotal places in history. Other sites highlight the untold stories—the no-less-important, every-day-remarkable stories of African Americans in history.

BLACK HEROES: Polar Exploration

Photograph by Robert E. Peary, National Geographic

We have this in from Scott Burr, my mentor and spirit guide. As you all know, we’re still in Black History Month. As you all know, I’m an explorer at heart. I’ve explored the glacial sea south of Patagonia, but never been to the North Pole. But here’s a Black hero and explorer, Matthew Henson, who may have been the first man to reach the north Pole. He’s one of my heroes.

Matthew Henson was one of the era’s few African-American explorers, and he may have been the first man, black or white, to reach the North Pole. His grueling adventures alongside U.S. Navy engineer Robert E. Peary are chronicled in these dramatic early photos.

WELLNESS: Vegan Grits

10 Best Vegan Grits

From: Yummly

As most of you know, vegan diets are quite popular. My go to nutritional guides and integrative medicine consultants are vegan fans. I’m not a true vegan. I still eat some meat and fish, and a little bit of dairy once in a while. But if you’re thinking about moving in the direction of veganism, I’m not gonna say “don’t do it.”

KIDS/TEACHER'S CORNER: Crystal Growing

As a young child, before the age of 11 or 12, I loved growing crystal gardens. I covered the min an earlier issue, and I’d like to revisit crystal growing. I used coal, because we had a coal furnace, and ammonia, but I don’t recommend that. I moved in the direction of using borax to create crystals and also borrowing ideas from STEM boxes for the challenged as well as the gifted and talented students. All should be done under the supervision of a teacher, parent, or guardian.

How to Grow the Best Crystals

From: Science Buddies, By Teisha Rowland, Ph.D.

Have you ever wondered how crystals are made? Crystals come in all different shapes and sizes. However, the purest and cleanest crystals are usually also the ones that grow to be the largest in size. In this activity, you will compare the size and shape of crystals grown at different temperatures. With just water and Borax, a household cleaning product, you can discover the method for growing large, pure crystals!
