Heavy rains produce major floods in Vermont, New York and other parts of the Northeast
From: NPR, By: Joe Hernandez, July 11, 2023
Heavy rains that swept across the Northeast earlier this week have given rise to calamitous flooding in parts of New England and New York, killing at least one person, destroying structures and hampering travel. Parts of Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York were inundated by the storms, and heavy rains have caused rivers to spill over in Vermont, stranding people and washing out roadways.

PHENOMENON: The Saharan Dust Cloud
A NOAA satellite has spotted a continent-sized cloud of hot air and dust originating from the Sahara Desert crossing over the Atlantic Ocean headed toward the southeastern U.S. The cloud is expected to reach Florida, Texas and other gulf states over the weekend. The dust cloud will bring brilliant sunsets, but it will also bring reduced air quality and those with asthma and other respiratory conditions should use caution when spending time outdoors.
Saharan Dust Cloud in Florida Will Leave You Tasting Sand in Your Mouth
From: Newsweek, By: Giulia Carbonaro, July 10, 2023
A Saharan dust cloud is moving across the Atlantic Ocean and could soon reach Florida, according to weather forecasters, bringing hotter days, less rain, and poorer air quality.
The dust cloud that's traveling toward South Florida is a mixture of sand and dust from the Sahara, a desert area that covers most of North Africa. If the wind blows strongly on the Sahara, clouds of dust can reach very high altitudes and be transported as far as the U.S.
THE HEAVENS: The Northern Lights
There were early forecasts that the northern lights would be visible much farther south than they normally are in the U.S. this week. However, predicting the visibility of the northern lights is much like predicting the weather. Forecasts using the most recent data are not showing that they will be visible as far south as was hoped. The aurora borealis will be visible in Alaska and Canada. Residents in northern states including Michigan, Minnesota, Montana and Wisconsin should be able to see a faint glow on the northern horizon but will miss the full light show.
8 Places in the United States Where You May Spot the Northern Lights
You don't need a passport to catch one of the world's most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Normally, you'd have to head north to destinations like Norway, Finland, and Iceland in hopes of catching a glimpse of the northern lights, and while all of these destinations are well worth traveling to, there are a few less-expected spots right here in the United States where you can see the spectacular celestial show.

NOAA’s official northern lights forecast shows how far south aurora borealis may visible
From: OregonLive, By: The Associated Press, July 13, 2023
The northern lights could put on a show this week — though the audience will be much smaller than some early forecasts had suggested. The sky spectacle will be fairly typical: Stretches of Canada have a chance to spot the shimmering curtain of the aurora borealis, while a few in the U.S. could see a faint reddish glow on the horizon. Here’s what to know about the updated predictions. For those in range, seeking out clear, dark skies between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. local time will give the best chance to see the aurora’s colorful glow.
WELLNESS: The Power of Friendship
Friendships are a powerful aid in maintaining both mental and physical health, as well as our happiness. The following article explores why nurturing friends throughout our life is essential to our well-being – understand the science-backed power of friendship.
Understanding the power of friendship
Research shows that we’re designed to exist in groups. For early humans, isolation meant death, and social bonds increased the chances of protection, finding food and survival. In short, there was safety in numbers. Today, the power of friendship isn’t directly linked to survival, but it’s still an essential aspect of human existence
The power of friendship is such that lacking meaningful social bonds can negatively affect our physical health as well as our mental health. In fact, loneliness causes an increase in stress hormones, which send white blood cells into overdrive and wreak havoc in the immune system.
International Friendship Day
International Friendship Day created by the United Nations is observed worldwide on July 30th to celebrate the bond of friendship. It is a day to promote friendship and community, and how everyone is appreciated and observed in different cultures.
