REACHING BIG: Machu Picchu and the Shaman Tradition
Shamanism is thought to be a generational Quechuan medicine man art usually passed on through family blood lines, someone who learned their craft at the knees of a Grandmother, Grandfather or elder.
Machu Pichu
Machu Picchu
Get deep into Peru and explore the many archeological sites around Cusco and the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our rugged hike to Machu Picchu along the Inca trail culminates with a staggeringly beautiful view from the Sungate, high above the ruins. And that’s not all…. We’ll be back the next day, for our second visit to the site, and an exhilarating hike up Machu Picchu mountain.
Shaman
Considered one of our world’s top feats of land use, art and architecture, Machu Picchu was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1983. As one of the great Inca empire’s last strongholds during the Spanish conquest, the intricately designed and painstakingly hand built stone city deep in the tropical Peruvian Andes holds as much insight to the Incan civilization, as it does mysteries.
WELLNESS CORNER: MEDITATION
Some of us just can't meditate, it took me years to realize it's not easy. And, then more years to realize I could do it alone, no coaching required. And, then another set of years to realize it could be done almost anywhere at any time. Remember my friends: Getting quiet births clarity.

Meditation Deep Dive
A Meditation On Breath

In stillness receive breath's nourishment

Life's current expressing as organs, tissues and cells

Deeply nourishing, animating presence

Exhale through the skin, opening all pathways

Relax all edges that bind or separate

Be of a field, boundless and open

Expressed by the whole

From which we can never be separate

Life's shimmering expression

SEAFARING HISTORY: ONE STRONG WOMAN
Pirates have roamed the seas of the world since at least 1800 BC. Some were women. The safest way for a woman to enter piracy without disguise was to have the favor of the captain or be the captain themselves. One such female pirate, Anne Bonny, became the head officer of the ship where she effectively ran it as the captain.

Anne Bonny
From Wikipedia
Anne Bonny (8 March 1697 – disappeared April 1721), sometimes Anne Bonney, was an Irish pirate operating in the Caribbean, and one of a few female pirates in recorded history. What little that is known of her life comes largely from Captain Charles Johnson's A General History of the Pyrates.

Bonny was born in Ireland around 1700 and moved to London and then to the Province of Carolina when she was about 10 years old. In 1718 she married sailor James Bonny, assumed his last name, and moved with him to Nassau in the Bahamas, a sanctuary for pirates. It was there that she met Calico Jack Rackham and became his pirate partner and lover. She was captured alongside Rackham and Mary Read in October 1720. All three were sentenced to death, but Bonny and Read had their executions stayed because both of them were pregnant. Read died of a fever in jail in April 1721 (likely due to complications from the pregnancy), but Bonny's fate is unknown.
ARTIST'S CORNER: Calley O'Neill, Big Island, Hawaii
I met Calley on a dance floor in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, a jazz bar across from the Kings Palace. Everyone was hopping around with joy, the guitar strummers, drums, and harmonica. This is a magical talented woman, a master of the healing arts too.
Calley O'Neill
Calley O'Neill
The Big Island’s Calley O’Neill is a highly respected conservation and cultural artist and muralist, with a long term and broad range of creative and educational experience.

Journalists have described her as a ‘force of nature’, a ‘wayfinder’, a ‘positive force’, and her diverse art as 'ethnovisionary', 'dynamic', ‘leading edge’, and 'breathtaking', noting her 'crystalline mastery of glaze painting’.

Her art, which spans more than four decades, finds its expression primarily in public stained glass mosaic murals that honor the Hawaiian people and their ancestral wisdom, and large, provocative interspecies wildlife thangka paintings. Her art speaks to human evolution, transformation, and the conservation of nature.
