TRAVEL: Beth's Turkey

In the past few weeks, we’ve been following the travels of fellow Flockers Jim and Angela Gannon as they made their way around South Africa and later, Istanbul, Turkey. There is one place in Turkey that is very special to me, and I want to share that place this week. I found the ancient city of Ephesus to be beyond impressive when I visited Turkey. Ephesus is a historical site and was a very large and important cultural center in its day. While I was there, I had the good fortune of going to a classical music concert underneath the stars and a glowing moon in the Theater of Ephesus. I hope you enjoy learning more about Ephesus below.

Ephesus

From:UNESCO

Located within what was once the estuary of the River Kaystros, Ephesus comprises successive Hellenistic and Roman settlements founded on new locations, which followed the coastline as it retreated westward. Excavations have revealed grand monuments of the Roman Imperial period including the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre. Little remains of the famous Temple of Artemis, one of the “Seven Wonders of the World,” which drew pilgrims from all around the Mediterranean. Since the 5th century, the House of the Virgin Mary, a domed cruciform chapel seven kilometres from Ephesus, became a major place of Christian pilgrimage. The Ancient City of Ephesus is an outstanding example of a Roman port city, with sea channel and harbour basin.

The Great Theatre of Ephesus where concerts are still performed.

Ephesus is located near the western shores of modern-day Turkey, where the Aegean Sea meets the former estuary of the River Kaystros, about 80 kilometers south of Izmir, Turkey.

10 things to do on Mount Lemmon, where it's 20 degrees cooler

Get fudge, ride a ski lift, stay in a cozy cabin, admire the starry sky

From: This is Tucson, By: Gloria Knott, June 19, 2023

Anything cooler than Tucson's triple-digit temperatures sounds like a dream. Lucky for us, Mount Lemmon is just a drive away and is generally about 20 degrees cooler than the fiery summer temperatures in Tucson. Of course, there are more reasons to visit Mount Lemmon than the nicer weather, though it's definitely a perk.

EDUCATOR'S CORNER: International Education

Wow! The University of Arizona never ceases to amaze me. Back in 2015 the roots were planted for a new unique partnership where the UA offers its Bachelor of Arts in Law degree to students at Ocean University of China in Qingdao, China. The dual-degree program allows students to simultaneously earn a UA bachelor's degree in law and an LLB (the law degree commonly offered outside the U.S.) from Ocean University.

Nation's First B.A. in Law Now a Model

The UA's Bachelor of Arts in Law program recently surpassed 700 students and also will be offered online for the first time this fall.

From: The University of Arizona News, By Alexis Blue, July 11, 2017

As a university student in China, Keyan Zhu was interested in learning about law but wasn't sure where to start. Then a friend who attended the University of Arizona encouraged her to look at a groundbreaking new program at the UA — the first Bachelor of Arts in Law program offered in the United States.

Zhu took her friend's advice and traveled overseas to attend the UA, where she earned her B.A. in law in 2016. She now works as a paralegal at a corporate and immigration law firm in New York, where she conducts research and prepares contracts and other documents for attorneys. She plans to eventually pursue her Juris Doctor degree and practice law in the U.S.

7 Facts About J.K. Rowling’s Charity Work

Fom: Borgen Magazine, Ausust 23, 2018

J. K. Rowling is best known for authoring the Harry Potter book series, which were released between 1997 and 2007 and sold more than 450 million copies worldwide. Rowling is also exceptionally charitable; as someone who has risen from poverty to fame and fortune, she has made a point of giving back to those less fortunate. In her 2008 Harvard commencement speech, she stated, “[Poverty] is not an ennobling experience. Poverty entails fear and stress and sometimes depression; it means a thousand petty humiliations and hardships.” With this mindset, she has gone on to support numerous charities.

REACHING HIGH: Marolt Brothers

Marolt brothers latest expedition leads to U.S. Ski Hall of Fame

From: The Aspen Times, By: Scott Condon, April 13, 2018

Ever since their dad took them skiing in Fourth of July Bowl on Independence Pass on July 3, 1977, twin brothers Steve and Mike Marolt of Aspen have experienced a natural progression as ski mountaineers.

That path will land them in the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame.

The identical twins are part of what the hall calls a “star-studded group of eight noted skiing athletes and sport builders” who are part of the class of 2017. They will be inducted and honored with a ceremony Saturday in Squaw Valley, California.

THE NEXT GEN: Jonas Eriksson Ziverts

We're going into the next generation for tennis, we've been focusing on Zoe Crimmel and we will follow up with her. This week we are also featuring a young U of A tennis star, Jonas Ziverts, originally from Sweden, who is hoping to push ahead and make it on the professional tours of tennis. Please look out for Jonas. If you want to contact him directly to help support his cause, please don't hesitate to jump aboard. Jonas can be contacted through his website here.

Jonas Eriksson Ziverts

"As a Tennis Player from Sweden and the University of Arizona, it’s a pleasure and an honor to represent the Swedish and Wildcat community on the tour. While I absolutely love training and competing, I like to think of myself as more than just an athlete. I’m working hard to be a positive role model to the youth of today by building a legacy people will remember me for."

Here’s what University of Arizona Tennis Head Coach Clancy Shields has to say about Jonas: "I couldn't think of a finer young man to support than Jonas Ziverts. He has meant the world to our team and elevated our program in more ways than I can explain. Every once in a while, we are lucky enough to coach a kid with a special star. Jonas is certainly one of those kids. Jonas has led our team to unprecedented heights the past 5 years, and I know he will carry that standard of excellence in the next chapter his life as a professional tennis player. The next step for him will be a challenge and he will need a great deal of support to get his career off the ground. I hope you will consider supporting Jonas as he begins his journey. I know he can achieve his goals and dreams and I can't wait to see our special Wildcat on the big stage representing the A!"

Zoe is now playing on the Women's Tennis Association Tour. The WTA is the principal organizing body of women's professional tennis. The WTA was founded in 1973 by Billie Jean King and a group of eight women's tennis professional players. You can follow Zoe's rise through the rankings on her WTA page. WELLNESS: Walking & Stretching

'I'm not just faster, but taller': how I learned to walk properly - and changed my pace, posture and perspective

From: The Guardian, By: Tim Dowling, June 19, 2023

When I was told I could reap huge health benefits by learning to walk better, I was sceptical. I was already pretty good at walking, I thought. It turned out I had a lot to learn

In all the time I spent with Joanna Hall, she barely stopped walking. I would see her coming towards me in Kensington Gardens, London, gliding past the other strollers as if she alone were on a moving walkway. When she reached me, I would fall into step and off we would walk, for an hour. At the end, Hall would stride into the distance and keep walking, for all I knew, until we met the following week.

Active, intelligent, happy and trainable, the Havanese breed is ideal for the guardian who wants a small dog that can be content with frequent walks and games of fetch.
