KENTUCKY DERBY: 1875-2023
|
The Kentucky Derby is a horse race held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, United States, almost always on the first Saturday in May, capping the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. The competition is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds at a distance of one and a quarter miles (2.0 km) at Churchill Downs. Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kilograms) and fillies 121 pounds (55 kilograms).
It is dubbed "The Run for the Roses", stemming from the blanket of roses draped over the winner. It is also known in the United States as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" or "The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports" because of its approximate duration. It is the first leg of the American Triple Crown, followed by the Preakness Stakes, and then the Belmont Stakes. Of the three Triple Crown races, the Kentucky Derby has the distinction of having been run uninterrupted since its inaugural race in 1875. The race was rescheduled to September 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Preakness and Belmont Stakes races had taken hiatuses in 1891–1893 and 1911–1912, respectively. Even with the Olympics and major professional sports leagues canceled at those points, the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont took place during the Great Depression and both World Wars.

You know, I don’t know if people know it, but female jockeys have been competing against male jockeys in the derby since 1904.
Women have played an active role in Kentucky Derby history since the turn of the century. In 1904, Mrs. Laska Durnell nominated Elwood to the Kentucky Derby, unbeknownst to her husband, trainer Charles Durnell. The decision was a shrewd one and Elwood won as the longest price in the field of five. Elwood was the first starter and winner owned by a woman, and also the first winner bred by a woman, Mrs. J.B. Prather.

What to Wear at the Kentucky Derby
|
Women
One of the truly unique characteristics of the Kentucky Derby, and its sister event, the Kentucky Oaks, is that they are sports parties that showcase the finest in spring fashions. Both female and male attendees pull out all of the stops when selecting their Kentucky Derby and Oaks apparel.
| |
Men
The Kentucky Derby provides a splendid excuse for men to get just as dressed up and decked out as the ladies! The modern Derby man possesses an unparalleled color palette. Sun-drenched, tropical colors in bold stripes or busy plaid and bright pastels steal the limelight. Although, if you want a more polished look, a classic navy or seersucker blazer is always in style.

This week I will be featuring the art of stuffed cabbage around the world with Hungarian stuffed cabbage front and center.
Comforting cabbage rolls have international history
Stuffed cabbage rolls, a blend of sweet, sour and savory flavors, are popping up everywhere from diners and delis to five-star restaurants. They are the new mac-and-cheese, but comfort food with a healthful twist, warming the cockles of your heart, while warding off heart disease. Many countries lay claim to its origins, which accounts for the several interesting riffs on the traditional recipe.

The stuffed cabbage leaves gently bake in a simple tomato sauce. This easy stuffed cabbage recipe can be made ahead of time and baked just before serving.
WELLNESS PART 2: Hibiscus Tea and Flax Seeds
There are 2 foods that will lower your blood pressure. One is to drink hibiscus tea (2-3 cups/day) and the second is to add ground flax seeds to your diet. 1-2 tablespoons per day. Maybe sprinkled on oatmeal. Also eat berries, beets, and greens, especially arugula.
From: Healthline, By: Rachael Ajmera, MS, RD, March 6, 2023
Hibiscus is high in antioxidants and offers many potential benefits. In particular, it may help promote weight loss, reduce the growth of bacteria and cancer cells, and support the health of the heart and liver.
Hibiscus is available as an extract or, more often, a tea. Hibiscus tea is an herbal tea that’s made by steeping parts of the hibiscus plant in boiling water.
It has a tart flavor similar to that of cranberries and can be enjoyed either hot or cold.

The Top 9 Health Benefits of Flaxseed
From: Healthline, By: Rachael Ajmera, MS, RD, January 31, 2022
|
One serving of flaxseed provides a good amount of protein, fiber, and omega 3 fatty acids. It may help lower the risk of some cancers, help maintain a health weight, and reduce cholesterol and blood pressure.
With its mild, nutty flavor and crisp, crunchy consistency, flaxseed is a versatile ingredient that can enhance the taste and texture of almost any recipe.
One way to use this seed is by mixing it into my morning smoothie. It also makes an excellent addition to pancake batter, homemade veggie burgers, and even overnight oats.

PET'S CORNER: Pippin and Gimli
Pippin is on the left, Gimli on the right
Here's Pippin and Gimli's story from cat mom Monica Craig.
|
In 2008 I was very sad because I had to put my cat Sassy down. A couple weeks later, my Vet from Valley Animal Hospital called and said that a litter of kittens had been abandoned on their doorstep and asked if I wanted to come pick one out. I said yes and picked the only male kitten of the litter. An orange and white tabby with big ears. They said they would call when he was old enough to go home with me, which would be in about 6 weeks.
A few days before I was to pick up my kitten, the vet called and said there was a problem. I went in immediately thinking he was sick or was going to have special needs. They had me come back to the kennel to show me. They put my kitten in my arms and almost immediately, another kitten in the litter started screaming at the top of her lungs. They explained that they were bonded and if I took her brother, she might stop eating and starve. I called my dad and told him the situation and he agreed that we would take both. At home it was the same thing. If I picked up one or the other, the female would start crying for her brother. They are 14 years old now, and are still bonded. Their names are Gimli (m) and Pippin (f).
