REACHING HIGH & WIDE: Mauna Loa Erupts
Hi readers, well you know what I really thought Mauna Loa was going to give us a big show quite soon. It turns out that quite soon is now. I've included some pictures of not only reaching high but reaching wide. She's flowing wide right now and approaching Saddle Road, the short route over to the east side of the island. If she does swallow up Saddle Road, she'll also swallow up access to Mauna Kea. Currently the Pu'u Wa'awa'a Forest Reserve is safe, but it also falls in a possible path for the lava flow. Most people are familiar with Kilauea, which has been erupting on and off since 1983, but Mauna Loa is the big one. I think the goddess Pele has been planning a big one here, she may have even brought in her uncle Lono. We'll be sure to keep you updated on this dangerous yet beautiful flow.
2022 Eruption of Mauna Loa
The largest active volcano in the world, Mauna Loa, is erupting for the first time since 1984. The eruption began in Mokuʻāweoweo, the summit caldera of Mauna Loa, around 11:30 p.m. HST on Sunday November 27, 2022. A fissure opened within Mokuʻāweoweo caldera and produced a large lava lake that filled the crater within two hours. Soon after, lava flows briefly overflowed from the southwest portion of the caldera, but posed no threats to populated areas.
The eruptions of Kīlauea and Mauna Loa are visible from a distance along overlooks on Crater Rim Drive. The eruption of Mauna Loa is not accessible and is located in closed areas of the park. - NPS Photo

Pele
Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park
| |
Pele is the Hawaiian volcano deity, an elemental force, and the creator of these volcanic landscapes. According to tradition, she is embodied by the lava and natural forces associated with volcanic eruptions.
I got upstaged by Pele this week and givin my history in Hawaii, I got a bit sidetracked from India month. This week we're covering the Sikh religion which was founded in the late 15th century in the Punjab region of India. In India Sikhism is still concentrated in the Punjab region, but it has also spread throughout the world, particularly in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. As you probably already know a true Sikh never cuts their hair. I have met some men whose hair goes well beyond a foot in length. It's often twisted and twined and rolled up inside a distinctive turban. I once had the privilege of having a very close Sikh friend. I learned much about the Sikh traditions and of course how to make a proper Chapati, a flat bread made with whole wheat flower and cooked fresh in a cast iron pan. I want to say nothing can compete with a warm handmade Chapati.
The Sikh tradition, known in the Punjabi language as Sikhi, is a relatively young tradition that was founded over 500 years ago in the Punjab region of South Asia. There are more than 25 million Sikhs around the world, which makes Sikhism the world’s fifth largest religion. Sikhs first came to the United States in the late 1800s and there are an estimated 500,000 Sikhs living in America today. Sikhi teaches a message based on the principles of love and oneness and calls on all followers to be spiritual warriors. Meditation, service, and justice are core aspects of the Sikh way of life. Sikhi is a distinct religious tradition that maintains its own distinctive features, including founders, scripture, worship, ceremonies and traditions.

Holy Ground: Sikhs and the Golden Temple
More commonly known as the Golden Temple, Harminder Sahib means “temple of God.” It houses the Eternal Throne, where social and judicial matters within the Sikh community are settled, and the sacred pool, from which the city of Amritsar got its name. The third of the ten Sikh gurus had the idea to build a central place of worship for the Sikh people. The fourth, fifth, and sixth gurus made that idea a reality by founding Amritsar and the Golden Temple. Over time, the temple became a symbol of spiritual and historical traditions for the Sikhs and is the main place Sikhs want to visit today.

Introduction to the Traditional Dress of Sikhs
The Ceremonial Attire of Sikhism
| |
What do Sikhs wear? The traditional attire of Sikhs dates back centuries. Sixth Guru Har Gobind initiated the warrior tradition of wearing two swords which are depicted in the khanda, or Sikh crest. His grandson, Seventh Guru Har Rai, wore a chola when training at arms and riding horseback. Tenth Guru Gobind Singh, established the dress code tradition of wearing kakar, five required articles of faith, for the initiated Sikh. The Sikh code of conduct specifies the wearing of kachhera and a turban for all Sikh males, giving Sikh females the option of wearing a headscarf to cover hair. The name for such traditional spiritual attire is bana.

From: Mom Junction, By: Nisha Bharatan, B.Tech, November 29, 2022
Langdi, Kho-kho, Pallanguzhi, and Lagori are some of the famous traditional Indian games for kids. They are a part of India’s rich heritage, history, and culture. They have been mentioned in many ancient Indian scriptures indicating their existence for many centuries. With the increasing prevalence of video games, online games, and gaming gadgets, these traditional games have lost their importance. However, these games should not be forgotten, and schools may also consider adding them to the curriculum as they include physical exercises and are a lot of fun. They help children improve their motor and social skills. Read this post to know about these and many other indoor and outdoor traditional Indian games.

WELLNESS SPOTLIGHT: Anuraag Jaiswar
I was recently on a Regency Cruise with Michael and I would say new friends, because it's so easy to make new friends on a cruise ship. On this ship there was an amazing athletic trainer who was trained in Pilates, cardio, flexibility, balance, body building, conditioning for runners and cyclists, and much more. As part of his contract with Regency I had to promise not to praise him until after November 19th. He is from India and is wonderful, gentle, and open to all ideas and types; fat, skinny, athletic, etc, etc. I'm presenting him this week, in his own words, now that he's been released from his contract.
Athletic Trainer Anuraag Jaiswar

I was born and grew up in the city of Guwahati, Assam, India. And as I grew up. I never really thought that I would become a fitness instructor in the first place. But the passion for the gym developed in me in my schooling years as one day I decided to not be the under confident/unsecured fat kid anymore. Since the 9th standard at school, working out became an integral part of my life but I had no clue then that I am going to do more than just working out, that one day I am going to help people across the world to better themselves.
I feel honoured when people thank me for my service. I feel grateful for being able to make a contribution to people’s lives in making it a little better for them.
