Rosh Hashanah

From: History.com, By History.com Editors, September 7, 2022

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is one of Judaism’s holiest days. Meaning “head of the year” or “first of the year,” the festival begins on the first day of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar, which falls during September or October. Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection and repentance that culminates in the Yom Kippur holiday, also known as the Day of Atonement. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the two “High Holy Days” in the Jewish religion.

REACHING HIGH: Scotland

Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland

You know I'm still traveling in the United Kingdom. I've gone to Ireland, Scotland, and England on this trip and gotten a little bit of trekking in. In Scotland there were several delicious peaks, nothing like the Himalayas, but still rugged and beautiful. I didn't summit the peak below, but I did get to several in Scotland and Ireland. Maybe on the next trip I’ll summit Bn Nevis.

What is the highest mountain in Scotland? The 13 highest mountains in Scotland - and how easy they are to climb

These are the highest munros in Scotland.

From: The Scotsman, By: Binny Sanderson, March 17, 2022

Scotland is famed for its rugged wilderness. And there is perhaps nowhere in the UK which feels farther from the bustle of civilisation than at the summit of a mighty munro.

Climbing a mountain brings with it a spectacular sense of achievement. So much so that in Scotland there is a challenge known as ‘munro-bagging’ –reaching the summit of all 282 of Scotland’s mountains which are taller than 3,000ft.

But which are the greatest challenges of them all?

If you’ve ever climbed Arthur’s Seat and thought that was quite high, Ben Nevis is the height of more than five Arthur’s Seats on top of each other.

We take a look at the very highest munros in Scotland, and how difficult each one is to climb.

TECHNOLOGY: Evolution of the Bicycle

French Bicycle Poster

With the El Tour de Tucson coming up I thought it would be fun to look at the evolution of the bicycle. My personal favorite is a 12-year-old custom Fuji. I still love it and it's my racing bike of choice. I was reflecting on the evolution of the bicycle here's what I've found.

The Evolution of the Bicycle

From: Bridgeman Images Blog, By: Bridgeman Team, May 31, 2017

According to some historians it is almost 200 years since the first documented bike ride by Karl von Drais in 1817 and the city of Mannheim in Germany is planning to celebrate this bicentenary with a major exhibition. The answer to the question of who invented the first bicycle often depends upon the nationality of who you ask as over the years many people have contributed ideas and developments.

Let’s take a look at the evolution of the bicycle, showing the craze for cycling is nothing new.

1493: the Earliest Bicycle Sketch…

It has been said that Leonardo da Vinci was the first person to ever visualise the concept of a bicycle but was unable to construct it. News of a bicycle-like sketch is said to have been discovered during the ten-year restoration period of the Codex Atlanticus in the 1970s that had not been seen for 500 years.

Since 1998, Hans-Erhard Lessing, a Professor of Physics, has claimed it a fraud and leans towards the more popular opinion that the bicycle originated in the 1800s in Germany.

A Brief History of Marbles (Including All That Marble Slang)

From: Mental Floss, By: Rob Lammle, November 3, 2015

If you're the type of mibster that has knuckled down with a taw and shot for an aggie duck, then you already know quite a bit about mibs. If you're among the many people who have no idea what any of that means, stick around as we explore the history of marbles.

Rolling Through History

Believe it or not, but no one really knows where marbles originated. They've been found in the ashes of Pompeii and in the tombs of ancient Egyptians, and they were played with by Native American tribes, so it's impossible to pin down a precise country of origin. The earliest examples were simply stones that had been polished smooth by a running river, but for centuries artisans made them by hand from clay, stone, or glass.

ASTRONOMY:Jupiter

Jupiter

We haven't looked at astronomy for a while. I know this was a special week for Jupiter, in case some of you missed it Jupiter was the closest it’s been to the Earth in 59 years. There are still plenty of opportunities to see Jupiter and other planets in the night sky.

Jupiter is coming its closest to Earth in decades

From: NPR, By: James Doubek, September 25, 2022

The gas giant Jupiter is coming the closest it has come to Earth in 59 years this Monday and will be particularly visible because it coincides with another event called opposition.

When in opposition, a planet is on the opposite side of Earth from the sun, so you could draw a straight line from the sun to Earth to Jupiter, all in alignment. Jupiter's opposition happens every 13 months. Looking from the Earth, when the sun sets in the west, Jupiter will rise in the east, directly opposite. During opposition, planets appear at their biggest and brightest.

Separately, Jupiter is coming closer to Earth than it has since 1963. Because of Earth's and Jupiter's differing orbits around the sun, they don't pass each other at the same distance each time. When it's closest on Monday, Jupiter will be about 367 million miles from Earth, according to NASA. At its farthest, it's 600 million miles away.

Jupiter In Depth

From: NASA Science

Jupiter is the fifth planet from our Sun and is, by far, the largest planet in the solar system – more than twice as massive as all the other planets combined. Jupiter's stripes and swirls are actually cold, windy clouds of ammonia and water, floating in an atmosphere of hydrogen and helium. Jupiter’s iconic Great Red Spot is a giant storm bigger than Earth that has raged for hundreds of years.

Jupiter is surrounded by dozens of moons. Jupiter also has several rings, but unlike the famous rings of Saturn, Jupiter’s rings are very faint and made of dust, not ice.

Visible planets and night sky September-October 2022

From: Earth Sky, By: Marcy Curran, John Jardine Goss & Deborah Byrd, September 25, 2022

Jupiter is ascending in the east as October evenings begin. That’s because it reached opposition – when Earth flew between Jupiter and the sun – on September 26. The bright planet lies directly south of the eastern side of the Great Square of Pegasus, a large square pattern in our sky with 4 fairly bright stars marking its corners. Between the Great Square and the bright planet is a pretty, but faint group of 6 stars known as the Circlet. They comprise the western section of the constellation Pisces. Zodiacal Lights

Late September-early October mornings: Zodiacal lights 90 minutes before sunrise

Take advantage of these moon-free mornings to look in the east, about 90 minutes before sunrise, for the zodiacal lights. This false dawn is caused by sunlight reflecting off dust in the plane of our solar system. View at EarthSky Community Photos. | Kris Hazelbaker in Grangeville, Idaho, captured this photo of the zodiacal light and a meteor on October 11, 2021. Kris said: “I had seen the zodiacal light the previous morning, so I made sure my gear was set up that night for early morning action. After framing the image, I set my intervalometer and let it run as the light got brighter. After downloading the pics, I found this one that includes a meteor.” Thank you, Kris!
