Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”
Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church”—the main church in the vicinity of their home—for a special service.

What follows is a look around the world of how mothers are honored, usually in the month of May.
Mother's Day Traditions Around the World
In honor of Mother's Day, we set out to discover how different cultures across the globe celebrate moms.
| |
|
In many U.S. households, the second Sunday in May begins with breakfast in bed, a bouquet of flowers, homemade cards, and other tokens of affection for mom. Mother’s Day — our country’s version, at least — has been an official holiday since 1914. In other corners of the globe, honoring Mom is a rite grounded in local traditions and customs — some ancient, some surprisingly new.
"Most cultures celebrate mothers because they are traditionally the main caregiver, which comes with great responsibility," says Mei-Ling Hopgood, author of How Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm: And Other Adventures in Parenting. Here, we take you on a quick trip around the world to discover how moms in five different countries are celebrated and to provide some inspiration for your own day. Share our "bring it home" ideas with your family or use them to celebrate your own mom.

From the field contribution from Norman Fishman. One of our most coveted Flockers and dog father to Bigsby and Willis. His contribution this week is sending us the most motherly bird he could think of.

Bird Mom Awards: The Good, the Bad, and the Just Plain Weird
Here's to the mothers that keep it together, no matter how wild things get.
| |
|
Best Overall: Osprey
Osprey mothers take parenting seriously. They do most of the incubation and care for the hatchlings for weeks after they appear. Ospreys are famous for aggressive defense of their nests. Researchers venturing too close to a nest report harrowing near misses from Ssprey talons. Mom and the chicks dine mostly on fresh fish, caught daily and delivered by dad.

Dr Fox is launching a virtual class very soon. He’s reached out to let me know that any Flockers are welcome to join. He has promised to let us know when it is ready, and as soon as we know, we will let you know when and where.

We have a couple of field contributions under wellness this week. Elizabeth Dobai has shared her Hungarian stuffed cabbage recipe.

1 lb ground beef
1 lb ground turkey
1 french bread bun
1 egg
Salt
Pepper
Garic powder
1 red onion
Olive oil
Tomato paste
Dill

To get started, put fresh cabbage in boiling water until the leaves come off. Set the leaves aside to cool. Soak bread bun in water. Then scoop out the center of the bun. Mix both ground meats together with egg and soaked bread center.
Next, mince half a red onion. Brown minced onion in medium sauce pan with olive oil. Let browned onion cool and to meat mixture. Then add 1⁄4 cup of sour kraut to the meat mixture as well. Next, add salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste to the meat mixture. Mix meat mixture well. If you would like to add rice, you can fold it in with the ground meat.
Now, roll a portions of the mixture into the cabbage leaves tucking in the ends. Arrange cabbage rolls in a stock pot in layers. One layer cabbage rolls, and one layer sour kraut. Repeat layers placing the ham hock in the center. Once layers are completed, add thin layer of tomato on top with dill.
Add water till it reaches the tomato paste, cover, and cook for two hours. Then serve with sour cream. Egeszsegedre!

WELLNESS: Tart Cherry Juice
Kimberly Gomer has asked that we pass along some information about the anti-inflammatory properties of tart cherry juice
7 Tart Cherry Juice Benefits That Could Revolutionize Your Holistic Health
This once-obscure grocery staple may be a nutritional elixir you didn’t know you needed, according to nutritionists.
| |
Out of all seasonal fresh fruit, cherries have a reputation for being a harbinger of warmth — the bright red bulbs are freshest at the height of summer. But when I began to see pure cherry juice pop up on grocery shelves and at local farmer's markets all year round, I couldn't help but be intrigued. That's because, as of late, tart cherry juice is trending in the health space for its slew of possible nutritional benefits.
HORSE RACING: The Triple Crown
Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing
The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, commonly known as the Triple Crown, is a series of horse races for three-year-old Thoroughbreds, consisting of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. The three races were inaugurated in different years, the last being the Kentucky Derby in 1875. The Triple Crown Trophy, commissioned in 1950 but awarded to all previous winners as well as those after 1950, is awarded to a horse who wins all three races and is thereafter designated as a Triple Crown winner. The races are traditionally run in May and early June of each year, although global events have resulted in schedule adjustments, such as in 1945 and 2020
The Preakness Stakes is an American thoroughbred horse race held on Armed Forces Day which is also the third Saturday in May each year at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. It is a Grade I race run over a distance of 9.5 furlongs (1+3⁄16 miles (1,900 m)) on dirt. Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds (57 kg); fillies 121 pounds (55 kg). It is the second jewel of the Triple Crown, held two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks before the Belmont Stakes.
What to Wear: The Preakness Stakes
|
The Triple Crown horse racing season is such an exciting time watching and learning about all the horses, sipping delicious cocktails, socializing with friends and family, and of course, wearing the latest derby styles, fashion, and fascinators. While the Kentucky Derby is all about tradition and classic looks, the Preakness Stakes takes a little bit more of a trendier approach. Bright colors and floral patterns are still in, but accessorizing with equestrian leather details and a trendy handbag is key. We also suggest wearing practical footwear – especially waterproof footwear if rain is in the forecast.
Known for it’s famous Black-Eyed Susan flowers, the Preakness colors of black and yellow make a great color palate for your outfit. If you like the edgy-lady look, accessorize with black leather equestrian jewelry, and pair it with a more feminine style dress.
| |
The Belmont Stakes is an American Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds run at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. It is run over 1.5 miles (2,400 m). Colts and geldings carry a weight of 126 pounds (57 kg); fillies carry 121 pounds (55 kg). The race, nicknamed The Test of the Champion, The Test of Champions and The Run for the Carnations, is the traditional third and final leg of the Triple Crown. It is usually held on the first or second Saturday in June, five weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks after the Preakness Stakes.
What to Wear to the Belmont Stakes
The Hamptons are known for drawing big names to Long Island’s shores every summer, but for one weekend in June, all eyes are on Nassau County. World-class horses, trainers and celebrities will descend on Elmont for the 149th running of the Belmont Stakes Saturday, June 10, the third and final leg of the Triple Crown. And without a Triple Crown contender, viewers will have more time to focus on fashion, like bold hats that give Kate Middleton a run for her money. Whether you’re headed to the races or to a watch party, I want you to arrive in style.

The rule of thumb for finding the right shoe is to know there is no one right perfect shoe, just perfect options. My advice to all of you who run is to never wear the same pair day in and day out to prevent overuse injuries.
