HUMAN HERITAGE: ROCK HEWN CHURCHES
I remain in awe of the memories from this World Monument Fund site preserving the cultural heritage of Ethiopia.
Lalibela (ላሊበላ) is history and mystery frozen in stone, its soul alive with the rites and awe of Christianity at its most ancient and unbending. No matter what you’ve heard about Lalibela, no matter how many pictures you’ve seen of its breathtaking rock-hewn churches, nothing can prepare you for the reality of seeing it for yourself. It’s not only a World Heritage site, but truly a world wonder. Spending a night vigil here during one of the big religious festivals, when white-robed pilgrims in their hundreds crowd the courtyards of the churches, is to witness Christianity in its most raw and powerful form.

Rock-Hewn Churches, Lalibela
The 11 medieval monolithic cave churches of this 13th-century 'New Jerusalem' are situated in a mountainous region in the heart of Ethiopia near a traditional village with circular-shaped dwellings. Lalibela is a high place of Ethiopian Christianity, still today a place of pilmigrage and devotion.

RACER SANDY WASHBURN: SEBRING BOUND
Family friend Sandy Washburn is Sebring bound, the king of corners.
Since my time at St Marks when Tim Palmer introduced me to a bug eye Sprite and I drove an MGA at Cape Cod one summer, I have been fascinated by historic race cars and street sports cars.
I was the lucky winner of the L&M Cigarette jingle contest in 1961 during my Amherst freshman year with a brand new Austin Healey Sprite. Several years later, I sold the Sprite and purchased an Austin Healey 3000 from a farmer in Hadley. After putting a new set of Michelin tires and spark plugs in the car, I drove non stop to Bakersfield California to work in the oil fields for the summer.
Senior year, I drove the Healey To Sebring Florida and spent a week as a volunteer crew member for the Delmo Johnson Grand Sport Corvette team at the Sebring 12 hour race week. I totally wrecked the Healey the week following our graduation, and it was not until 2003 that I began 15 years of building and racing tribute race cars as a hobby with my son Bill who had started a race car garage after attending two years of community college. He has been my inspiration and a valued partner in a shared garage for the past 10 years.
In 2003, I built a Factory Five Cobra kit which I raced at several New England tracks. After a crash at Lime Rock, I totally rebuilt the car and sold it in 2009. My next tribute car was a 1968 MGC GTS Sebring race car which my son and I built from a bare shell with a Toyota 1JZ double turbo engine. I raced the car for five years at Watkins Glen, Lime Rock, Summit Race track, and other tracks in the Northeast. In 2015, I built a 1965 Shelby GT 350 R model Mustang tribute car from a bare shell and sold the MG on the Bringatrailer auction site.
I have raced this Shelby Mustang during the past five years in the Northeast and in 2016 my son and I trailered the Mustang to Sebring race track where we ran the car for two days before heading north to the VIR race track for two days of racing.
Last year, I purchased a 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL Tribute race car which will be my last sports/race car. I raced the car last summer at Watkins Glen, Lime Rock, and Club Motorsports in Tamworth NH. The Shelby Mustang was sold recently to a friend and I plan to compete against the car in my BMW. Those that race vintage race cars and do their own maintenance on a budget are quite a close fraternity, and age does not appear to be a problem as long as you are alert and are not a safety hazard on the race course.

My kind sister-in-law just gifted me an original Mina Papatheodorou-Valyraki painting of runners. Could I be luckier, I think not.

Keith Murfee-DeConcini has launched his podcast called Disability Empowerment Now.
This podcast is designed to address topics, such as social inclusion, employment, accessibility vs. inaccessibility, voting rights, and more. These topics are important to me because disability rights are civil rights and human rights, as well as an integral part of diversity.
The DEN podcast is available wherever you listen to podcasts. Just "follow" or "subscribe" to Disability Empowerment Now.

Here is a 3 minute preview of the podcast, featuring Jennifer Longdon, Assistant Minority Leader of the Arizona House of Representatives, and former US Senator Dennis DeConcini, who was involved in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act:

In 2019, 22,677 of our neighbors were processed through Tucson Immigration Court, only 4,618 were able to hire a lawyer.
- 18,059 people stood alone
- 541 were able to win their case without representation
- 17,518 families were torn apart
Of the 17,518 families, 10,861 would not have been torn apart if they were represented by a lawyer.
- Only 3% of people who appear without a lawyer are able to stop their deportation.
- When given access to a lawyer, those who appear 62% win their case.
It is time to be in solidarity with our neighbors, our families, our community - ADELANTE UNIDOS!
