Faith Comes by Hearing
So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17
In the early 2000’s I learned of the organization, Faith Comes by Hearing. They promoted listening to the Bible on cassette tapes and CD’s while in the car, exercising or doing household tasks. They leaned on the Bible verse above, depending on the Holy Spirit to work through the Word of God in our ears.
Back then, we lugged around thick packets of tapes and CD’s. It was a great concept, but a bit unwieldy. Now, there are multiple Apps that allow us to carry the entire Bible with us on our phones. How convenient! I’ve recently rediscovered the incredible blessing of listening to scripture.
I value silence, but sometimes I want to listen to something. I used to turn on news radio or listen to a podcast. But honestly, I was becoming overwhelmed by the information I was consuming. I wanted my days to be shaped by God, so I turned to Scripture. I found the app called bible.is from Faith Comes by Hearing and I’ve really been enjoying it!*
I’m hearing stories I don’t remember hearing before, like the one about Balaam and his talking donkey (Numbers 22). I listen to a couple chapters at a time whenever I feel like it. Genesis and Exodus are packed with stories, while Leviticus and Numbers consist of many specific instructions for God’s people regarding worship.
But the point is, I’m surrounding myself with scripture; when I brush my teeth, fold laundry, or get ready for bed. And I trust the promise that the Holy Spirit is working through the Word I hear. I invite you to try it, and see how the Holy Spirit works in you.

*There are other apps too; I know of a youth from our congregation who is listening to the Bible through “NIV Bible App +” and he really likes that one.
