STAFF NOTES
A MINUTE FOR MUSIC
Sometimes we find real comfort in knowing that we are not alone in our struggles. An article in the Fall UU World magazine titled: “Music Programs Find Challenges, Creativity in Move Online” by Joshua Eaton, gave me that supportive feeling of affirmation: “It's not just me!”

As I read, I found myself nodding and thinking; “Exactly! That’s what our choir has been going through.” Eaton says, “As choir rehearsals have moved online, the work of many choir directors has shifted toward pastoral care for choir members mourning the loss of singing together in-person.”

And in choosing hymns for our Sunday worship services, I have coincidentally moved in the same direction that Dr. Glen Thomas Rideout describes, falling back on less traditional Western European hymns in favor of “heart songs.” These simpler, expressive songs, like “Comfort Me” or “Woyaya” are repetitive and easy to sing, allowing us an emotional outlet rather than an intellectual one. But that’s a topic for next month’s Minute for Music!

CYRE NEWS
Hey there!

2020-2021 Children and Religious Education (CYRE) classes will begin on Sunday, October 4th! This year our young children’s programming will be split into two classes, PreK-1st grade and 2nd – 5th grade. These classes follow the Soul Matters curriculum which has been adapted specifically this year to teaching in the online learning environment. Our middle school youth will be exploring different religions in the Neighboring Faiths curriculum and the high schoolers will continue with their youth-led discussion group format.

ALL children and youth attending CYRE classes must register; it's easy, just click HERE. Registration helps us learn names, track attendance, plan for activities, and accommodate any special needs.

Questions? Please contact our Director of Religious Education, Somaya Bernard, re@mvuuf.org.

ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTES

By now you have probably heard that my mother's health has been deteriorating, which is to be expected for someone experiencing stage 5 kidney disease and dementia.

I wanted to thank everyone for your kind & caring thoughts, prayers and positive energy as my family and I deal with this challenging concern. It means very much to me that you have reached out, and I truly appreciate your care & concern. We are hopeful that my mother's quality of life may improve as we help her transition to a memory care facility.

Workshop on Institutional Change Coming Next Month!

“The good news is that we are in control of what we do with our daily living. If we, each one of us, represent a missing remnant in the fabric of our collective future-then together we can lean into a possibility that we have yet to fully experience in human history. A collective wholeness. An unassailable good. That is the kind of salvation I am here to fight for in the small moments of every single day.” - Rev. Dr. Sofia Betancourt, “The Missing Remnant” (p.67 Widening the Circle of Concern)

In this time of restlessness and uncertainty, a yearning for real change becomes increasingly insistent. Perhaps holding a sign saying "Widening the Circle of Concern - Join us!" This was a report released by our Unitarian Universalist Commission On Institutional Change (COIC) at our General Assembly in June, 2020.

Looking for a path forward for your congregation to be guided by UU Voices of Color? Not sure what to do with your two Thursday evenings following the election? Want to get fired up before attending the UUJO annual meeting on Saturday, November 21st?

UUJO has just the opportunity for you!

Join UUJO Board members and- wait for it- Rev. Mel Hoover AND our very own Rev. Kellie- starting with two 90-minute sessions. We will look at one chapter in Widening the Circle of Concern, understanding the content, looking at action options, sharing what is working, and creating ideas for your congregation to work toward a new anti-racist America - making ALL of our Constitution real.

What: Widening the Circle of Concern - Making it Accessible

When: two Thursday nights, November 5th and 12th, 7-8:30 PM

Where: Register for Zoom information and reading materials
(registration information coming soon)

Why: Honoring 3 years of COIC work with action

Who: You and other members of your congregation

TRANSGENDER INCLUSION IN CONGREGATIONS
Workshop Coming This Fall!
MVUUF’s Transgender Alliance Group is offering the Transgender Inclusion in Congregations course by Transforming Hearts Collective this fall!

This course is for everyone from novices on trans identity to those with decades of life experience. The course pushes participants to the next level of congregational welcome, relationship-building, and skills-building. It counters mainstream narratives about who trans people are; supports understanding of non-binary identities (such as genderqueer, agender, and two spirit); and employs a deeply intersectional approach. “ ---From Transforming Hearts Collective

The Transgender Alliance Group grew out of an ally group that formed over a year ago as a supportive place where cisgender congregants could work on reducing and elminating their own internalized transphobia and heterosexism without harming our transgender siblings. We took this course to learn more about being a transgender ally and how to make our congregation fully inclusive and affirming of the full breadth of gender diversity and were all deeply moved by the course.

We will be offering the course in THREE interactive Zoom sessions that will include watching the lectures with time for group discussion and individual reflection.

Session #1 : Saturday, October 3rd 1-4:00 PM
Session #2 : Saturday, November 7th 1-4:00 PM
Session #3 : Saturday, December 5th 1-4:00 PM

Please mark your calendars and join us for Session #1 on Saturday, October 3rd from 1-4:00 PM.  If you attended the first session of this course in February before everything came to an abrupt halt due to the COVID19 pandemic, you can either join us for a refresher in October or pick up where you left off and join us for the second session in November!

ANTI-RACISM ALLY GROUP
Thursday, October 22nd 7:00 PM
There has been a lot of turmoil around racism in our country, state and city. Are you a white person with questions, ideas, concerns or just want a place to have discussions about what is going on?

Then please join our Anti-Racism Ally group on Thursday, October 22nd at 7:00 PM. Co-Leaders, Kristen Beireis and Bill Ross have revamped the group a little; each meeting will allow for learning, actively practicing being allies, open discussion, and creating actions we can take to follow and support Black, Indigenous and all People of Color (BIPOC) in our congregation as well as residents in the larger community. Meetings take place the 4th Thursday evening of the month.

If you have questions, you are welcome to contact Bill at rossviva@hotmail.com or Kristen at KristenBeireis@gmail.com

ST. VINCENT de PAUL LUNCH
Saturday, October 10th 10:30 AM
Thanks to all those who have donated funds and all those who have been willing to provide extra large batches of menu items as we continue with the COVID-19 plan we began in April. We ask MVUUF members and friends to provide beef or ground turkey sloppy joe sandwich filling,  salad and fresh fruit, and to deliver or arrange with Lynn Buffington for pick up.

For COVID safety we deliver to the outside door at St. Vincent's and the hard working St. Vincent's staff will serve the meal. Please check the SignUp Genius for how you might help and please pay careful attention to the labeling instructions.  Note: we drop off the main dish cold on Fridays and other items by 10:15 AM on Saturday morning.

Because of the expense of large “batches,” we are reimbursing cooks and shoppers for ingredients.  We accept financial donations for this purpose.  You may donate by sending a check made out to MVUUF with memo line "St. Vincent's." Please mail to 8690 Yankee St, Dayton 45458. Because MVUUF still needs our funds for operating expenses, more than ever, please only donate for St. Vincent's if you are able to also continue to contribute to MVUUF operating expenses. You can contact Lynn with questions, including about reimbursement process, and suggestions:  ABUFFLG@Gmail.com or 937-657-0426.
AROUND THE FELLOWSHIP
UNSUNG HERO

Congratulations to this month's Program Council Unsung Hero, Diane Colvin!

Diane is a well-organized, dedicated volunteer. She has served MVUUF as the Membership Rep for many years. During that time she helped reinstitute Covenant groups and continues to chair that program and facilitate one of the groups each year. She’s a long time member of both Women’s Group and the Daytime Book Group, contributing her wisdom and friendship. She donates her time to congregants who need help, especially when needing a truck to help move possessions. You may also have heard her share her musical talents playing piano during a Sunday service. Diane quietly contributes in big and little ways to much of what we do. And, if you’ve ever been a lucky winner of one of our Service Auction baskets, she probably made the bow for it!

FALL-OWEEN LABYRINTH WALK
Halloween Weekend
Mark your calendar: CYRE Committee is planning a Fall-Oween Labyrinth Walk on the weekend of Halloween this year. It will be a drop-in activity as a COVID-safe alternative to our annual Halloween social gathering. Families and individuals are invited to bring a painted pumpkin or gourd, home-made scarecrow, or other fall decoration (preferably natural, nothing gruesome, please) to share in the labyrinth. Drop off by Friday, October 30th, before 6:00 PM. Families should plan to pick things up after Sunday, November 1st, if they want to keep them.

You will have an opportunity to walk the lovely labyrinth, and there will be activities on the path. You can wear costumes or not, but please take the opportunity to take your picture and post it on the MVUUF Beloved Community Facebook page, if you are willing. Since we cannot be together, we hope that this co-creation and shared enjoyment will be enjoyed as a new way to experience our community.

Participants will sign up for a time to visit, so that we can keep our distance and keep our community safe. Sign Up HERE. If you arrive and others are already in the labyrinth, please put on your mask, give space, and wait to enter. You can walk around back to see the wetland in fall, lay on the grass and watch clouds (or stars), crunch through leaves, or hunt for acorns.

If you have an idea to share or want to help, please contact Genevieve Harvey, genevieve4home@aol.com.
