STAFF NOTES
A MINUTE FOR MUSIC
One of my responsibilities as your music director, in collaboration with Rev. Kellie or whoever is speaking, is choosing the music for Sunday worship service. From the opening Prelude to the closing Postlude, my goal is always to enhance the message of the morning. Kellie has shown me that there are many different modes of communicating; verbal, like story-telling or poetry, visual, experiential (like creating a web with string, remember that service?) and musical. When planning a worship experience, we strive to express the message in as many modes as possible in order to “hit the right note” for everyone at some point.

For me, the lyrics of a song or hymn are only one part of the meaning. There is an emotional context as well. For example, if I play “Turn the World Around” (Harry Belafonte) you are going to feel energized and optimistic, even without the words. “Claire de Lune” will slow your breathing rate. And singing familiar tunes, like “Spirit of Life” creates a sense of connection and belonging to each other. I hope each week you experience something in our worship service that feeds your spirit and gives you hope.

CYRE NEWS
Hey there!

It's that time of the year again! Summer is coming to an end and we are all preparing to start our fall activities and rituals, many of which will look different this year as we all continue to navigate this new normal together. An important area that will look a little different this year is our Children and Youth Religious Education (CYRE) programming.

All summer we've been meeting on Zoom for class, which is what we'll continue doing as we start our curriculum year this fall. This year our children's programming will be split into two classes, PreK-1st grade and 2nd - 5th grade and following the Soul Matters curriculum which has been adapted specifically this year to teaching in the online learning environment.  Our middle school youth will be exploring different religions in the Neighboring Faiths curriculum and the high schoolers will continue with their youth-led discussion group format.

Now where you come in!
We're looking for volunteers to join our PreK-1st and 2nd-5th teaching teams and a co-teacher for the middle school class. The curriculum year will start on Sunday, October 4th this year, which is a little later than it has been in previous years to allow everyone a little extra time to get settled into their new fall routines. All classes will be held on Sundays (PreK-1st grade from 9:00-930am, 2nd-5th grade from 1:00-2:00pm and MS/HS from 2:30-3:30pm) and in this online environment, you can volunteer to teach CYRE without missing any of the worship services! We will provide you with all the tools you need in our Virtual Teacher Training Retreat on Wednesday, September 23rd @6:30 PM.

Ask any of our congregants who have volunteered in CYRE and you will find that it is one of the most rewarding ways to become more engaged in our community and grow in your own understanding of our Unitarian Universalist faith. Please contact our Director of Religious Education, Somaya Bernard (re@mvuuf.org) or our CYRE volunteer coordinator, Gail Saugstad (norsky118@aol.com) to volunteer or if you have ANY questions.

TRANSGENDER INCLUSION IN CONGREGATIONS
Workshop Coming This Fall!
MVUUF’s Transgender Alliance Group is offering the Transgender Inclusion in Congregations course by Transforming Hearts Collective this fall!

This course is for everyone from novices on trans identity to those with decades of life experience. The course pushes participants to the next level of congregational welcome, relationship-building, and skills-building. It counters mainstream narratives about who trans people are; supports understanding of non-binary identities (such as genderqueer, agender, and two spirit); and employs a deeply intersectional approach. “ ---From Transforming Hearts Collective

The Transgender Alliance Group grew out of an ally group that formed over a year ago as a supportive place where cisgender congregants could work on reducing and elminating their own internalized transphobia and heterosexism without harming our transgender siblings. We took this course to learn more about being a transgender ally and how to make our congregation fully inclusive and affirming of the full breadth of gender diversity and were all deeply moved by the course.

We will be offering the course in THREE interactive Zoom sessions that will include watching the lectures with time for group discussion and individual reflection.

Session #1 : Saturday, October 3rd 1-4:00 PM
Session #2 : Saturday, November 7th 1-4:00 PM
Session #3 : Saturday, December 5th 1-4:00 PM

Please mark your calendars and join us for Session #1 on Saturday, October 3rd from 1-4:00 PM.  If you attended the first session of this course in February before everything came to an abrupt halt due to the COVID19 pandemic, you can either join us for a refresher in October or pick up where you left off and join us for the second session in November!

ANTI-RACISM ALLY GROUP
Thursday, September 24th 7:00 PM
There has been a lot of turmoil around racism in our country, state and city. Are you a white person with questions, ideas, concerns or just want a place to have discussions about what is going on?

Then please join our Anti-Racism Ally group on Thursday, September 24th at 7:00 PM. Co-Leaders, Kristen Beireis and Bill Ross have revamped the group a little; each meeting will allow for learning, actively practicing being allies, open discussion, and creating actions we can take to follow and support Black, Indigenous and all People of Color (BIPOC) in our congregation as well as residents in the larger community. Meetings take place the 4th Thursday evening of the month.

If you have questions, you are welcome to contact Bill at rossviva@hotmail.com or Kristen at KristenBeireis@gmail.com

ST. VINCENT de PAUL LUNCH
Saturday, September 12th 10:30 AM
St. Vincent’s lunch on Saturday, September 12th:  Thanks to seven members who in August provided menu items for St. Vincent’s in larger-than-usual batches (25 to 50 servings!).

St. Vincent's recently contacted us to say how much they appreciated our continuing provision of meals. Some of their volunteer groups are not providing meals during COVID.

In September we continue with the COVID-19 plan we began in April.   We ask MVUUF members and friends to provide beef or ground turkey sloppy joe sandwich filling,  salad and fresh fruit, and to deliver or arrange with Lynn Buffington for pick up.  For covid safety we deliver to the outside door at St. Vincent's and the hard working St. Vincent's staff will serve the meal. Please check the SignUp Genius for how you might help and please pay careful attention to the labeling instructions.  Note: we drop off the main dish cold on Fridays and other items by 10:15 AM on Saturday morning.

Because of the expense of large “batches,” we are reimbursing cooks and shoppers for ingredients.  We accept financial donations for this purpose.  You may donate by sending a check made out to MVUUF with memo line "St. Vincent's." Please mail to 8690 Yankee St, Dayton 45458. Because MVUUF still needs our funds for operating expenses, more than ever, please only donate for St. Vincent's if you are able to also continue to contribute to MVUUF operating expenses. You can contact Lynn with questions, including about reimbursement process, and suggestions:  ABUFFLG@Gmail.com cell: 937-657-0426.

DEATH CAFES
Monday, September 14th, 7:00 PM
Death Cafes are gatherings of people who share refreshments and discuss death. They are held at churches, universities, hospice centers, yoga studios, and coffee shops around the globe, and now on virtual platforms.

There has been a significant amount of interest in this format, so MVUUF will host at least four upcoming Death Cafes. Any adult who is curious and open to talking and/or listening about death is welcome to join us. Feel free to bring your refreshments! We began holding these gatherings last month; after our gathering on Monday, September 14th, we will gauge the interest in continuing conversations throughout the year.

WE'RE A CARING COMMUNITY:
PASTORAL CARE "BROWN BAG" WORKSHOP
Coming Saturday, September 12th, Noon--3:00 PM
Have you ever wondered what "pastoral care" is, especially within a Unitarian Universalist congregation where many congregants are humanist, atheist, or agnostic?

Rev. Kellie will lead an interactive workshop to help us learn the basics of pastoral care so that we can ask for it when we need it, offer it to fellow congregants in our small groups (whether choir or a social justice action team), and refer a congregant to Rev. Kellie and the pastoral associates if needed.
Many of us are already offering each other pastoral care without even realizing it. Pastoral care is the companioning of another person while they handle a difficult situation or illness. It is deep listening and reflecting without fixing, advising, or judging.

Because we’ll be having this workshop via Zoom, we invite attendees to bring their own “brown-bag” lunch and snacks so that we can make sitting at a computer as comfy as possible.  If you are interested in attending the workshop, please contact Rev. Kellie at minister@mvuuf.org or mobile phone 847.804.4614.
SOUL MATTERS SMALL GROUPS
Sign Ups Coming Later This Month
During the next few weeks you will have the opportunity to join a Soul Matters Small Group during the 2020-2021 program year at MVUUF. These small groups bring 8-10 people together for a once-a-month sharing and listening session using the same theme as our worship service does. The monthly packet offers readings, activities and internet resources to inspire and challenge you, plus the added enrichment of interaction with your group.

The last few months have made it difficult to really share with each other in a meaningful way, and taking part in a Soul Matters Group via Zoom may be just what you’ve been missing! Groups will meet once a month, with morning, afternoon and evening time slots available. You will decide what works for your schedule and will indicate that when you sign up to participate.

Look for an email COMING SOON with Soul Matters Sign-up in the subject line and plan to participate in one of the spiritual activities that MVUUF offers members and friends. You'll be glad that you did!

COFFEE HOUR
Sundays, after the Worship Service, on Zoom
Even though we still are not able to meet in person, we CAN have some coffee (or another beverage) and enjoy chatting with one another during Coffee Hour!

All you need to do to participate is to stay on the computer/phone line after the service---it's as easy as that!

Still want to participate but unable to attend the service? Then scroll up to the beginning of this issue of The Forum and use the info provided for joining the service.

We'll be looking for your smiling face on Sunday afternoon!
