Foundation to Build a Better Future: Mary's Story

Wayne is a 9 year old boy with hemophilia from Kenya, who has been in our sponsorship program since 2022. Wayne is pictured below with his mother, Mary, and his little brother. Mary is a single mother, taking care of both boys. Irene Kalekye, the program manager of Jose Memorial Hemophilia Society, shared their story:

Wayne from Turkana has been in a sponsorship program for years with his brother. Their single mother, Mary, wisely uses the funds to start small businesses for extra income. When Wayne needed surgery last year, the family moved to Nairobi. It was Mary's first time in the capital, but she quickly adapted. Using her emergency savings from the sponsorship program, she opened a small green grocery business. The vegetable stand now provides daily income to cover their basic needs while Wayne continues his education in Nairobi. Through careful planning and determination, Mary transformed the sponsorship support into lasting independence for her family.

"The sponsorship program has been our lifeline," Mary says. "It gave us the foundation to build a better future."

We are so honored to have been a helping hand in Mary's story. She is an inspiration to us and we wish her and her boys all the success in the future!

Save One Life will be attending NBDF's Bleeding Disorder Conference in Aurora, Colorado. Come visit our booth and say hi!

Also, we will be presenting a talk, titled "Against All Odds: Stories that Inspire." Our goal is to share powerful narratives of resilience, determination, and hope. It highlights those in developing countries - that despite the challenges of living with a chronic condition, have achieved their dreams with support from the bleeding disorder community. Through these inspiring stories, we’ll explore the lessons learned, the strength of the human spirit, and how adversity can ignite action and innovation. Be prepared to leave motivated, empowered, and ready to make a change

The talk will take place on Friday, August 22 at 4 PM. We can't wait to see you there!

An Update on Vaughn's Monumental Adventure!

On July 21, Vaughn Ripley kicked off his cross-country ride in honor of Barry Haarde. Doug Mildram, our cross-country rider from 2023, joined him for his first leg, which was 50 miles to Conway, NH. It couldn't have been a better start, beautiful weather and great company for the ride!

Vaughn is currently halfway through his 756 mile ride from Bethel, ME to Harpers Ferry WV. He has reported back that he is doing well and having a great time. Vaughn, you are an inspiration to us and we are so grateful that you are carrying on Barry's legacy! All funds from Vaughn's ride go to supporting children in developing countries with bleeding disorders.

Thank you to Novo Nordisk for their generous support of Vaughn's ride.

A stunning view from Vaughn's ride
