Call for Homemade Valentines for Teachers & Staff by Feb. 13
We would love to see your child's creativity at work with a homemade Valentine's Day card for his or her teacher, adopted staff member, and/or LAMPS teacher!

These cards will be a sweet touch for staff as decoration for the Teacher Appreciation Committee meal during conference night on February 13. After the event, we will distribute them into staff mailboxes for Valentine's Day (the following morning).

  • We are asking that cards be no bigger than a sheet of paper (in order to fit inside the box).
  • On the back of the card, please label the teacher (or staff member's name), the child's name, and grade.
  • Starting Monday February 10, students can drop off cards in the collection box located outside of the Reading Nook across from the Main Office.

If you have any questions, please email Ashley Robinson .

BMA Passes Land Exchange for Property Behind FHES
As a PTO, our goal is to keep parents informed of important issues that could affect our school and to let you know what you can do to act. On January 13th,  the Germantown Board of Mayor and Alderman (BMA) approved a land-exchange agreement and a land-use agreement between the city and GMSD involving 15 acres of land behind Forest Hill Elementary and 21.8 acres of Houston Levee Park behind Houston High School.

Under the land swap, three of the 15 acres behind FHES would be designated for public utilities, a site they are strongly considering for a potential water tower. The additional 12 acres would be designated as a passive, low-impact parkland. The development of a water tower would require additional approvals and public meetings.

Both agreements will now need to be voted on by the GMSD Board of Education (BOE), which may occur as soon as their upcoming February 10th meeting.

While we have provided a brief summary about the land swap, we encourage you to click here to watch the BMA meeting to hear all of the dialogue about this important issue for yourself.

These articles also recap the recent BMA meeting:

If you are for or against the land-exchange agreement and the land-use agreement, it is important that you voice your opinion to the Board of Education PRIOR to the February 10th meeting date. The agenda for the meeting has not been posted yet. Here are the school board members' email addresses:

GMSD 2020-2021 Open Enrollment and Transfer News
GMSD's Open Enrollment for the 2020-2021 school year will close on February 7. Please visit  GMSD's website   for complete information about open enrollment and FAQs.

One VERY important FAQ from the GMSD website that affects FHES families who are currently on intra-district or inter-district transfer to FHES:

I currently have a transfer to a GMSD school; do I need to reapply to stay at the school?   No, GMSD transfers are good through that school’s exit year. Unless your student is currently in the school’s exit year grade (i.e. 5th grade at Farmington, Forest Hill, or Dogwood, or 8th grade at Houston Middle or Riverdale), you do not need to reapply. If your student is in the school’s exit year grade, you will need to apply for an Open Enrollment transfer to the school you would like to attend.

We did confirm this with GMSD. Families who are currently on transfer will receive a "continuing transfer" letter that they will need to upload during registration. They will NOT have to reapply for transfer as long as their address has not changed, and they are not in FHES's exit years of preschool or 5th grade.
GMSD PTO Awards Ceremony - Taking Nominations Now
Please email Chelsea Slabaugh with the names and a brief description of people you believe deserve this honor by Friday, February 7.

Each year the Council recognizes those who go above and beyond for each of our Germantown Municipal Schools. The Awards Ceremony will be held in April, and award recipients and their families are invited to attend. Award recipients are nominated by their volunteer board, a school administrator, or anyone who recognizes the nominee's exceptional service to his or her school. The council offers two awards - the S.T.A.R. of Excellence and the Legacy of Excellence.
S ervice to Schools
T ime and Talents Invested
A ctive Involvement
R esults Oriented
Nominees for this award should demonstrate exceptional dedication and service to their schools. Whether this person chairs an amazing event each year or is a key volunteer who makes it all come together, the S.T.A.R. nominee is kind and caring, brings out the best in others, and exemplifies the four criteria of the of the S.T.A.R. Award. Nominees may be a parent, a teacher, an administrator, adult volunteer, school crossing guard, or police officer.

The Legacy of Excellence Award was created in memory of Kristen Ames Melton, who tragically passed away in October, 2016. Kristen’s legacy is one of kindness, selflessness and tremendous work ethic. She never hesitated to go above and beyond for anyone and everyone, even those she had just met. Nominees for the Legacy of Excellence Award should be a parent volunteer that embodies the same qualities that made Kristen so very special. This award is given to one (volunteer) recipient each year.
