Council President Sara Nelson and Mayor Bruce Harrell Announce Proposals to Ease Small Business Permitting

Mayor Bruce Harrell and Seattle City Council President Sara Nelson introduced two new pieces of legislation to accelerate retail occupancy by amending existing building codes and reducing time-consuming regulatory barriers and costs for small businesses seeking to activate vacant commercial storefronts.

“In Seattle, we are committed to building a thriving economy by championing both bold new ideas and making the technical fixes that help our small businesses start, grow, and succeed,” said Mayor Bruce Harrell. “This legislation removes hurdles and burdensome costs that have consequential impacts on small businesses looking to activate our business districts. This type of practical change demonstrates the kinds of reforms we are accelerating through our PACT initiative – creating a better permitting system that supports small businesses and new housing.”

The Council approved by an 8-0 vote a resolution introduced by Council President Sara Nelson (Position 9) to dedicate up to 25% of any proposed sales tax increase to a progressive public safety initiative that would invest in critical addiction treatment services.

  • Neighborhood Business District Investments. Funding to improve public safety and the look of neighborhood business areas.

Woodland Park Zoo is planning for our future—and your voice and ideas are needed to shape it. The zoo is developing a Long-Range Facilities Plan (LRFP) to guide the physical development of the zoo over the next 20 years.

What is a Long-Range Facilities Plan? A Long-Range Facilities Plan creates a big-picture plan for how the zoo's buildings, animal spaces, and guest areas will grow, improve, and stay sustainable over many years.

Learning about your experiences and needs helps us make sure the zoo’s spaces reflect and support the communities we serve. Your feedback will guide plans for updates that strengthen our commitment to conservation and sustainability, celebrate diversity, and build deeper connections across people, animals, and nature.

Emergency Preparedness Resources

Prepare your workplace

Businesses play a vital role in our community. When they have a current business continuity plan in place, the impact of a disaster on the local economy is significantly reduced. Statistics indicate that businesses that remain closed for several days after a disaster are much more likely to go out of business permanently compared to those that have properly planned and prepared. Staying operational after a disaster is crucial for a full recovery.

Community-based organizations also provide essential services that residents rely on, making it critical to maintain these services for successful community recovery. Additionally, it is crucial for workplaces to establish effective plans and procedures to ensure the safety of employees and customers in the event of an emergency.

The OEM's Workplace Preparedness Guide provides valuable tips for developing life safety procedures and business continuity strategies. This guide includes easy-to-follow tip sheets, links to instructional videos and planning tools, as well as fillable forms for documenting important contact information and continuity strategies.

We hope this survey will provide us with a clear snapshot of your opinions and ideas, enabling us to address this question effectively in our application. Thank you for your participation!
