The young people who make St. Pete Youth Farm a welcoming place!

🌸 Happy Spring! 🌸

The Florida heat is in the air, and the pollinators are buzzing. This past month has been full of energy, even with the week off from Spring Break for our Youth Ambassadors.

We participated in this year’s Literacy Festival at the James Weldon Johnson Library. We opened up the farm for tours and information. We gave out dozens of our new bookmarks and gave away collard greens to some of our visitors.

We also welcomed Shorecrest Prep to the farm this past month for the second year. They’ve included us as a site for their Spring Break service week for their students. We had 12 awesome high schoolers come out Tuesday through Friday for 4 hours a day to get hands-on with every aspect of what we do at the farm, from water plants, siphoning fish waste, and composting. We also made a third batch of Collard Green Pesto with them that was available at our most recent Community Workday. We are so grateful for all the young people we host!

We ended the month with our 3rd Annual Women’s History Month Community Workday. It was so important to us to continue uplifting the work and contributions of women in our community, especially concerning the teaching and highlighting of African and African American History. All these women had that quality in common, and their work directly impacted the community and youth. We also planted flowers that day to honor all these women and beautify the outside of the farm.

This month has been all about dynamic women of the past and present, and of course, we are fortunate to have one in our leadership. Our Collaboration Manager, Carla Bristol, was honored by Unity of Midtown St. Pete this month at the Carter G. Woodson Museum for her contributions to History, Culture, and Society!

Sidewalk Community Garden Update!

We’re excited to reveal the newly painted Sidewalk Community Gardens! Local and international multi-media artist ZuluPainter created the vibrant murals on the boxes, each representing an important theme: driver safety, education, and nutrition. If you haven't made it to the farm recently, these beautiful 8' planter boxes are lined up along the street. We filled them with delicious herbs for the community to harvest, like rosemary, parsley, several varieties of mint, Thai basil, German thyme, and garden sage. Thanks to the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and Lowe's Home Improvement Tampa Bay for helping us make this idea reality.
