2023 in Review
Dear Sailing Science Supporter,

2023 is now astern! We want to thank you for following the Sailing Science Center over the past year. Without the support from people like you we could not have continued doing what we are doing. In 2023 the SSC sailed ahead, building more partnerships, friendships, and new exhibits than we could have imagined. Those accomplishments, and our new initiatives, have brought the SSC ever closer to our vision.

If you have been thinking about supporting the SSC, but have not yet made the move, now is a great time to take action. Donating is one way to help, but there are other options, too. At the bottom of this email is a range of things you can do.
SSC 2023 In Review
When we reflect on 2023, we are astonished by how far the SSC traveled in the span of 12 short months. The SSC's metrics grew in every category, with events reaching a rate of more than one per week during the summer months. It is inspiring to consider what we might do in 2024.
In 2023, the SSC:

1. Many of the SSC's videos are unlisted. Links to unlisted videos can be found in the SSC's newsletters.
2. The SSC's B-WET grant application included partnering with Call of the Sea, Cal Maritime, The Greater Farallones Association, The Ocean Film Festival, The Treasure Island Museum, and the Treasure Island Sailing Center.
3. The SSC's 34 events in 2023 was a 70% increase over the 20 events held in 2022.
4. The 20 organizations the SSC partnered with in 2023 compares with 8 organizations in 2022.
5. The 3500 people reached in 2023 was a nearly 5-fold increase over the 730 reached in 2022.
6. New exhibits included the Bernoulli Ball (introduced in 2021 but not incorporated until 2023), Coriolis 2023, the Flow Loop, the Magic Magnetic Pendulum, the Ocean Plastics Reveal Board, My Journey Across the Ocean (video), Archimedes Divers, and the Tensegrity Table. The exhibits in italics were produced by students, delivering on the SSC's vision to inspire young people at the creation stage of the museum, not just at the delivery stage.
2024 is shaping up with even more exciting things in store. We hope you will stay tuned and stay involved as we grow the Sailing Science Center to the next level!

A Year of Spotlights
Collage of 2023 Spotlight subjects
One of the great pleasures of producing the Sailing Science Center newsletter is getting to know our volunteers, partners, and supporters through the interviews we conduct for our monthly newsletter spotlights. Compared to prior years, 2023 saw a higher percentage of interviewees showing up as the leaders of outside organizations, and with multiple interviewees being the norm. The result is the large collage you see above.

A Year of New Exhibits
The SSC introduced eight new exhibits in 2023 (see above for a listing). Here are three noteworthy highlights.
The Flow Loop
The Flow Loop entering the Exploratorium
The Flow Loop exhibit stands out not only as the SSC's most substantial exhibit, but also as one of the first to be student-bult, completed by students in UC Berkeley's Department of Mechanical Engineering. The photo above shows it being wheeled into the Exploratorium for our December 9th engagement there.
The Flow of Plastics
(Ocean Plastics Reveal Board)
The Ocean Plastics Reveal Board
Also student-built, is Ashley Ragon's The Flow of Plastics, an interactive information board to educate viewers on how plastics enter the ocean, and the problems they cause when they get there. Ashley completed the exhibit as a Girl Scout Gold Award project. It appears above at the Exploratorium on December 9th.
Coriolis 2023
Elizabeth Henderson demonstrating the new Coriolis exhibit
SSC volunteer, Dan Pruzan, outdid himself with this newest exhibit to demonstrate the Coriolis effect. You can see SSC volunteer, Elizabeth Henderson, in the photo above, as she demonstrates it at the Exploratorium on December 9th.
