The Future of Building is Green

The focus on personal wellness, both individually and for employees, is a trend that has been growing for some time and it is not slowing down. In fact, it is ramping up.

A Greener Workplace

Demand for employees in construction is high and there are not enough people to fill the spots, so the employees are being selective about the companies that employ them. They want an employer who cares about them and their health. And because employees are paying attention to this, companies are following suit. According to Turan Duda, a Design Partner for Duda|Paine Architects, in an interview for Buildings.com , “The conversation has changed from how much energy can we save to how does the building affect people’s health and productivity.” Along with the push from employees, many companies are embracing greener buildings in an effort to not only take care of their employees but also lessen sick days and burnout. It’s a benefit to both parties. It’s a win for the employees because they work in environments that benefit them from a health and wellness perspective.And it’s a win for companies because they lose fewer people and productivity to issues tied to health, such as sick-days, stress-related illnesses, etc.

Green is the New Black

The future of construction will be centered around creating environments that focus on human optimization and performance with where we work being a key area.Even something like how the building handles indoor air quality. In a study by Terrapin , they found that in a typical office of 100 employees, unproductive time due to poor indoor air quality would cost $326,496 in wasted salary and benefits annually.It pays for employees to be healthy and happy. And corporations are recognizing that the building’s construction impacts their employees’ health. A USGBC survey found that the category for improved occupant health and well-being was chosen by 58 percent of respondents as the most important benefit. This is the main driver behind green building and it is more than a trend. It is a $134.4 billion market that is expected to grow 8 percent annually through 2022.

So, if you haven’t embraced the green yet, it’s only a matter of time!
