Region V WIN Speaker Series

Women Leading the Way:
A Revolutionary New Model for

Land Transition

Thursday, May 28, 2026

Join the Ohio Chapter of the Appraisal Institute for the third installment of the Region V Women’s Initiative Committee (WIN) Speaker Series. This virtual event features Kristina Villa and Annie Warmke in a conversation at the intersection of land, legacy, community, and women leadership.

Kristina will share the origin story of The Farmers Land Trust and the vision behind the Farmland Commons model—a new approach to farmland ownership that prioritizes long-term stewardship, farmer access, and community benefit over extraction and speculation.

Annie is proof that bold leadership grows in unexpected places. From the fields of southeastern Ohio to the founding of the Blue Rock Station

Sustainable Living Center and Farm, and having helped develop Blue Rock Farmland Commons, she has championed community, creativity, and the power of women who dare to lead. In this talk, Annie will share hard-won wisdom and practical inspiration to help women step into their strength, find their voice, and lead others toward a better future.

This session offers both a big-picture look at systemic change in farmland access and a grounded, real-world example of how one farm is making that transition today.

Date:

May 28, 2026

Time:

4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. EDT

Location:

Livestream via Zoom

**This Event is Free to All**

Meet Your Speakers

Kristina Villa is a farmer, communicator, and community coordinator who believes that our relationship to the soil shapes the health of our bodies, our economies, and our communities. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Media Studies from Kennesaw State University and brings over a decade of experience in farming, storytelling, and fundraising to her work.

Kristina lives and farms in Middle Tennessee with her husband and their six-year-old son, where they grow vegetables and raise cattle and meat chickens using organic and biodynamic practices. Their farm is a place of production, stewardship and self-reliance, where they can, freeze, and dry much of their own food as part of a deeper commitment to living within and caring for the ecosystems that sustain them.

She came to agriculture through an early interest in food access and food security, seeing farming as a tangible pathway toward a more just and nourishing food system. As a young farmer, however, she encountered firsthand the barriers to land access—struggling to afford land herself while witnessing many aging farmers around her face limited, often extractive options for transitioning their land. These experiences led her to focus her work on farmland access and succession, with a commitment to creating models that keep land in active stewardship and out of speculative markets.

Over the past several years, Kristina has dedicated her professional career to helping protect farmland from development and secure it within nonprofit land-holding structures that provide farmers, ranchers, and land stewards with long-term, affordable access and tenure.

In addition to her farming and land access work, Kristina serves on the board of Tennessee Local Food, contributing to statewide efforts to strengthen local food systems and support farmers.

Annie Warmke is a sustainability pioneer and activist whose work spans building Ohio's first Earthship, developing Blue Rock Station Sustainability Center and Farm, organizing rural family violence programs, and leading statewide and global networks for women in agriculture. She IS the farmer at Warmke Farm in Marietta where she is developing urban food forest gardens throughout her neighborhood.

After returning to Ohio in 2004, Annie was the farmer at Blue Rock Station Sustainability Center, where she taught workshops on cheese making, food forest gardening, natural goat care, and alternative building techniques. She co founded Women Grow Ohio and Buffalo Gals Voices, strengthening networks for women in agriculture across the state. She is also the author of books on natural goat care and co creator of the nationally syndicated podcast When the Biomass Hits the Wind Turbine.

In recent years, Annie has turned her focus to urban resilience. She founded Warmke Farm in Marietta, Ohio, where she is developing a food forest garden to demonstrate the power of backyard ecosystems to grow food and adapt to climate change. After a serious injury in 2025 that required her to relearn how to walk, she relocated permanently to Marietta and continues her work mentoring women, students, and community members.

Annie is a graduate of Ohio University, a mentor at Marietta College, and an active member of Women, Food, and Agriculture. Her life is a testament to courage, creativity, and the belief that ordinary people can build extraordinary change.
