FROM THE COMMODORE
by Scott Lacy

Winter is finally going away and our summer sailing season is about to start. The last couple of months have been a little cool, but we will wish for some of that cool weather down the road. March saw some wet weather for the St. Patty's Regatta. It was a great course and great party with the TMCA Club showing up to race and help with the after race party. The wet rain could have put a damper on the party, but Past Commodore Walter Caldwell and Board of Governors Wyatt Smith procured some covering from the Clearlake Shores Farmers Market and the party went on without a hitch. We were not so lucky with the Rib Regatta. After waiting all morning for the fog to clear and the wind to get above 10KTS, a ship and barge played tag and the Regatta was canceled after the Texas City Police closed the Texas City Levee.

May will begin with the Conundrum and end with the first Rum Race. In between is the Emerald Coast Regatta sponsored by LYC, GBCA and PYC.

The Conundrum is a SOS-TEX race on May 3rd. Get your best crew person or go singlehanded and sign up for this fun and demanding regatta. Your choice of which mark to make first could make all the difference... The Conundrum!  The Emerald Coast Regatta is an offshore race to Pensacola, Florida. The race will start May 23rd and 24th. A few racers will not be back from Pensacola when the first Rum Race starts on May 31st. The Icicles saw over 70 boats out racing and hopefully more boats will be out for the Rum Races. Get ready, summer sailing is here!

Please do not forget your membership. GBCA does not start the first of the year with your membership dues. Your one year membership starts when you first sign up. You should receive three email reminders and a letter by snail mail with a stamped envelope to send in your dues. Your Senior Membership (only $130) or Crew Membership ($50) is more than made back in Rum and food at the Icicles and Rum Races. Your Senior Membership can easily be recouped in just using your Senior Member Reward card at a participating business. Check out the Senior Members Rewards page on the web site. Without your membership, GBCA cannot provide the venue that you expect and deserve.

Even if you do not race, your membership can help make this a better club with your volunteering effort. Race Committee is a great place to learn firsthand about the rules of racing as well as watch some great tactics at the starts and finishes. If Race Committee duties might seem too much, consider setting up for an after race party. Both efforts are rewarding and great ways to meet potential Skippers looking for crew. Race Committee and after race parties don't just happen! They take a lot of hard work, dedication, and sometimes endurance to make GBCA "The Place to Race".
See you on the water. Sail fast...Sail safe!

HAWAII ON MY MIND....
By Chris and Justin Wolfe

I grew up sailing on the west coast and over there Hawaii is the place you wanna sail to.  It's downwind, it's warm, it's well...Hawaii.

You may have noticed a new J/120, Shearwater, on the Bay recently.  Maybe last summer during the last Rum Races, or Harvest Moon, or the Icicle Series, or perhaps you saw us dragging a drogue around the Bay recently.  We are Chris & Justin, we live in Austin, and we've been diligently making the 3 hour trek to Seabrook to sail or work on Shearwater since we arrived last July.

Now if you were stalking us you also might have noticed Shearwater was loaded on a truck this past weekend and she is now on her  way to Richmond, California.  Come July, Chris & I will be racing Shearwater Double-Handed in the 2014 Pacific Cup.  2200 miles, mostly downwind, from San Francisco to Hawaii.  As of today there are 70 boats entered and 20 boats in the Double-Handed division.  Everything from Moore 24's to a custom 100 footer are entered this year.  A typical race starts with a beat under the Golden Gate Bridge, a few days of windy reaching, followed by trade wind running under spinnaker to the Finish.  With luck we will finish in 12 days or so.

We bought Shearwater 2.5 years ago in Annapolis and we've been preparing for this race to Hawaii ever since.  There was a double-handed 20 day Trans Atlantic Crossing to Portugal in 2012, then a  raucous 30-40 knot blast down the Portuguese coast to Gibraltar last April, a far too warm sail down the Florida Keys and across the Gulf to Galveston last July and after our great time in Seabrook, Shearwater will soon get a taste of the Pacific Ocean.  Funny thing, when we crossed the Gulf last year, we were headed to Corpus Christi, but the winds conspired to drive us further north than planned and then the wind died and with fuel running low Galveston Bay became the closer destination.  We found the sailing community there so enjoyable we decided to stay and boy are we glad we did.

So, thanks to everyone we've met along the way, thanks to GBCA for putting together such a strong racing scene.  The sailing community, and GBCA in particular, have been so welcoming and the sailing, despite the thin water, has been spectacular.  Exactly what we've needed as we practice our boat handling in preparation for 12 days of double-handed sailing.

If you want to follow along with us to Hawaii, you can see what we are up to at www.svshearwater.com or www.pacificcup.org, and you can follow the race at www.yellowbrick-tracking.com.

With luck, the GBCA burgee will be flying proud in Hawaii this summer.

Fair winds,

Chris & Justin Wolfe

OIL SPILL CANCELS THE GBCA AND HOUSTON KITEBOARDING RIB REGATTA
By Jody Henry

After a foggy and breezeless beginning to the day, things were just starting to come together for the GBCA and Houston Kiteboarding RIB Regatta on March 22, 2014. The marks were set for the first course and the wind was finally blowing over 10 mph. The breeze had just shifted to the south when both spectators and competitors started to smell something in the air.

Teams on the rescue and race committee boats were checking their engines to see if there was a problem with the boats. People on a spectator boat texted the race committee and said they were seeing oil on the water just to the south of the racecourse. Within moments, word came that the adjacent Texas City Dike was shut down and people were being asked to leave. Competitors grabbed their gear and headed into the water hoping for at least one race before the impending bad news. Unfortunately, there was nothing anyone could do and the Police showed up informing race committee that a barge and tanker had collided in the Houston Ship Channel and there was oil leaking into the bay. Everything had to be packed up and all individuals had to evacuate the levee.

The regatta, sponsored by Cabrinha and Slingshot, was cancelled around 3:30 PM.  Organizers say they will definitely reschedule once the danger from the oil spill is over.   Nineteen racers from around the country signed up in three different classes.  After racing was cancelled, spectators and competitors were still able to enjoy ribs and chicken prepared by Big League Barbecue and beer donated by race sponsor, Karbach Brewing Co.  There was also a raffle for giveaways from Houston Kiteboarding including bags, shirts and hoodies, Gift cards from KO Sailing and a free 11m kite donated by Mauri Pro Sailing.  Matt Kryger, from Galveston, took home the kite.

The new date for the regatta has not been announced.
