“Much remains to be done... we are convinced this initiative brings benefits to organizations and people. It joins a series of other successful initiatives in our country on D&I. Certainly it will not solve historical issues overnight, but the GDIB (renamed to GDEIB in 2021) can support organizations and broaden their view, place points of attention on the map, and develop strategies to speed this movement up in our society.”

RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER
— AN INCLUSION STORY
| |
Many know the holiday story of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. But do you recognize it as a diversity and inclusion story? Rudolph — with his red nose — is different from the other reindeer. And the other reindeer bullied him because of his difference. But when his bright red nose helped guide Santa’s sleigh one dark and cloudy night, the other reindeer decided he was okay. It is great that Rudolph could step in and save the situation, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if they could just accept his difference rather than accept him because he was a high performer?

(consultants – please forward to clients)
The annual d&i Leaders Global Benchmarking Survey and Report explores the size, structure, renumeration, well-being and impact of in-house D&I leaders and their teams.
We would really appreciate it if you could spare 20 minutes to complete the 2021/22 survey before 14 January.
350+ from 15 countries responded last year!

ACTIONS TO HELP ACHIEVE THIS GLOBAL DEI BENCHMARK
STEPPING INTO THE GDEIB CATEGORIES – Addressing Some Areas Outside The DEI Function
And Getting Over ‘this feels too big.’
| |
Article by: Neil Griffiths, Senior Manager, Global Communication & Global Inclusion Lead, ERM, one of The Centre sponsors.
|
ERM, a sponsor of The Centre, is a leading global provider of environmental, health, safety, risk, social consulting services, and sustainability-related services. We work with the world’s leading organizations, delivering innovative solutions and helping them to understand and manage their sustainability challenges. To do this we have more than 5,500 people in over 40 countries and territories working out of more than 160 offices. Visit erm.com to learn more.
At ERM, we have fortunately taken a ‘whole organization’ view of DE&I for some time. Our journey certainly began with a more narrow focus, mostly around gender balance, but since 2018 we have expanded the view considerably. This was facilitated by our adoption in 2019 of the GDEIB as a model for assessing our performance and creating our roadmap for action.
We’ve now conducted three assessments (gladly making steady progress in many categories!) and there are some areas of the model that are consistently showing up as requiring improvement.
We’ve been careful to not create an action plan that overachieves, instead being focused on the things we know we can realistically accomplish with the resources we have available. Inevitably, this has meant some level of prioritization, but there has also been some amount of ‘this feels too big’ on some areas within the model.

BUILDING CULTURAL COMPENTENCY WITH GLOBESMART® |
GlobeSmart® (from Aperian Global, an Alliance Partner of The Centre for Global Inclusion) is an online learning platform that promotes global collaboration and inclusion.
Developing cultural self-awareness is an essential part of a thorough cultural competence development curriculum. The GlobeSmart® Profile can be very helpful for raising individuals’ levels of awareness—exploring how they differ from others and helping them to navigate those differences.
The GlobeSmart® Profile provides individuals with insight into their unique work-style; the Profile indicates their alignment along five cultural dimensions, and provides descriptions and videos to illustrate both what their personal alignment means and how it differs from others (see example below).

USING GDEIB TO GUIDE OUR WAY TOWARD DEI
Article by: Karen Francis, PhD Vice President and Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer, AIR, and 2021 Expert Panellist, GDEIB.
For quite a while, the American Institutes for Research (AIR) has been on a journey to embed diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in our organization, our operations, and our work. For the last three years, the Global Diversity and Inclusion Benchmarks (GDIB) have been a tremendous asset for guiding our DEI work. The standards provide a comprehensive framework to benchmark our progress by helping us identify gaps and inform our strategic action planning. With the release of the 2021 Global Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Benchmarks (GDEIB), AIR will continue to be guided with a strategic approach towards diversity, equity and inclusion.
DEI are essential components that drive the mission of our organization and are pivotal to our values, strategic goals, and our work both domestically and globally. We are guided by the principles of cultural and linguistic competence (CLC) to effectively address inequities and opportunity gaps across the globe. CLC helps our researchers and consultants better understand the strengths, needs and challenges of the communities in which we work and understand the questions that must be asked when designing and conducting studies and providing technical assistance.
For the past three years, we have used the Benchmarks tool to engage in our assessment process, bringing together senior leadership, staff, and stakeholders from across our organization, because DEI is everyone’s responsibility.

HOW TO USE THE GDEIB CERTIFICATION —
STILL IN THE PLANNING STAGE
SHALL WE COUNT YOU IN?
| |
|
We announced in our 2021 GDEIB Launch Event that we were exploring a voluntary certification process. We have finished the needs assessment and are preparing a plan. It will help us at this stage to let us know if you are interested in certifying one or more people in your organization. As you know, the GDEIB is free and we intend to keep it free—with a big thank you to our sponsors—see below in this newsletter or go to our website and navigate to Sponsors to learn about our 2021 GDEIB sponsors. We are now seeking sponsors for the certification process, but even with sponsors, plans are to charge for the voluntary certification.
ANNOUNCING OUR
GDEIB TRANSLATIONS
FROM ENGLISH TO SPANISH,
PORTUGUESE, AND FRENCH
| The Spanish and Portuguese translations of the GDEIB are ready and the French translation will be ready before the end of the year. We will celebrate these translations with articles and events next year, but if you are eager to get started using them go to our website and download the translations. Please note that you need to sign the User Agreements to use the English and all the translations. As is the English version – the translations are all free. | |
THE GDEIB CO-BRANDING OPPORTUNITY
|
Your logo here!
+ 2 inside pages
about your DEI program
| |
The Centre is offering all GDEIB users an opportunity to add your organization logo to the front cover of the GDEIB and create two inside pages that will be positioned before the Table of Contents. You may use those two pages to contain a message from your organization or diversity leaders, or a description of your DEI program, or however you see fit.
Please send us a high resolution logo and prepared “camera-ready” copy for the two pages. They will be back-to-back, with the first page appearing on the right side and the second on the left hand side of the page; therefore you cannot create a spread. Cost is $1,000 and we will invoice you. This offer also applies to the Portuguese, Spanish, and French translations – all of which will be ready shortly. Please give us about a week or 10 days from the time we receive your logo and copy for the two pages before we send you your customized GDEIB. Contact: thecenter@centreforglobalinclusion.org.
