ISO Conversation Partners!

UM's English Language Institute seeks 10 UM students to serve as conversation partners with Japanese high school students from Kumamoto prefecture for one-hour on three Friday evenings in January and February 2024. The students are working to improve their English language skills and don't often get the opportunity to speak with native English speakers.


Sessions held on Zoom and require no previous experience or training:

  • January 19 6:00-6:50 pm MST
  • January 26 6:00-6:50 pm MST
  • February 16 6:00-6:50 pm MST

Career-Building (& Extra Credit!) Opportunity

Stop by the ALi Auditorium, 2:00-3:30 pm on Tues. February 6 for an ELCS pop-up coaching event!


The kind of support offered exclusively to you GLI students will include: fine tuning resume for job/program applications, finding international job experiences, finding local job experiences, how to market skills & experiences developed through GLI in an interview/cover letter/resume, and more!


Extra-credit will be offered to both GBLD 220 and 110 students who attend, so check your Moodle pages!

The China-US Exchange Foundation is offering scholarships for young people (age 18-30) to participate in the “One Young World” summit in Montreal this September. The application is very short - and so is the deadline to apply: 31 January 2024. They may prioritize applicants from rural states like Montana!

Baucus Institute Program 1: CUSEF Cultural Exchange

In Spring of 2024, the Baucus Institute plans to bring up to 15 students from Montana-based colleges and universities to China for 10 days! Former U.S. Ambassador to China Max Baucus and his wife Mel plan to accompany part of this program. This program will travel to Hong Kong, Beijing, and Shanghai, meeting with government and business leaders, as well as visiting cultural sites such as the Forbidden City and the Great Wall. Students will also meet with Chinese university students to learn about the lived experience of their peers in China.

Program dates: June 9 to 19, 2024.


Application Due: no later than midnight on Wednesday, January 31, 2024.

Baucus Institute Program 2: Climate/Environmental Emphasis


This 4-week Baucus Institute program has an emphasis on learning about China’s sustainability efforts, with lectures and site visits to power plants, EV battery manufacturers, and the Wanxiang Innova Smart City project. Up to 15 students from Montana-based colleges and universities eligable.


Students will be hosted on Hangzhou Wanxiang Polytechnic’s campus in Hangzhou, with side trips to Beijing and Shanghai. Students will also participate in several cultural courses, including tea ceremonies, martial arts, language classes, calligraphy, making incense art, and woodblock printing. Day trips usually include visits to a silk museum, the Xixi wetlands, a tea farm, and an evening canal cruise through Hangzhou. Lunches and dinners are group events, creating informal opportunities for American and Chinese students to learn about each other over shared meals.


Program dates are June 30 to July 27, 2024.

Literacy nonprofit Writing Coaches of Montana is currently recruiting new volunteer coaches from all academic and professional backgrounds. We teach coaches how to deepen students' (grades 4-12) critical thinking across all content areas!
