BTC Writing Workshops!

z

The Franke GLI, together with the Writing and Public Speaking Center, will be putting on a Scholarship Writing Workshop series ahead of the April 6 GLI scholarship deadline. If you are working on your BTC application (plan and scholarship), a strong scholarship application will directly result in more funding for you. (If you are getting this by error, it’s just because our spreadsheets aren’t updated! These workshops are for folks doing their Beyond the Classroom Experiences summer ’24, fall ’24, or academic year 24-25).

These workshops will be held in conjunction with the Writing Center and help you through the two major parts of the scholarship application: the budget worksheet and the essay questions.

Workshop Number One: Wednesday, March 13th, 2:00-3:00 in Theta Rho

  • In workshop number one, we will:
  • establish where you are in the process,
  • determine what piece is most challenging for you
  • give you clear, actionable things to work on based on what you have written (or not written) thus far, and give you the option to
  • schedule a follow-up session with a writing coach

Workshop Number Two: Thursday, March 28th, 3:00-4:00 in Theta Rho

  • In workshop number two, we will:
  • fine-tune your responses so you feel confident in your submission ahead of April 6th.

Please RSVP so we can staff an adequate number of writing coaches.

  • Please let us know if you have questions. We’re really happy to help you craft the strongest application possible and look forward to seeing you at the workshops!

From Co-Lab for Civic Imagination...

March 27 UM Campus-Wide Democracy Summit

On March 27, 2024, in conjunction with a Presidential Lecture visit from noted democracy scholar Danielle Allen, UM’s Co-Lab for Civic Imagination and its Director, Professor Michael Rohd, will co-host a campus-wide summit on democracy and democracy education. The day will feature student-led activities, faculty voices, creative approaches to participatory dialogues, and performance/art.

Three questions will guide our activities and conversations across the day’s events:

  • What does UM do in the classroom and beyond to prepare students to be active participants in a democratic society?
  • What do UM students want from the University when it comes to democracy education?
  • What can we imagine together- UM students, faculty, and staff- that can build and sustain institutions and communities rooted in healthy democratic practices?

More details and a webpage coming soon!

Please reach out to Michael.rohd@umt.edu for more info and with any questions.
