The Center for Black, Brown, and Queer Studies (BBQ+) is an independent Center dedicated to interdisciplinary research, pedagogy, and mentorship in critical race, Indigenous, postcolonial, and queer studies. Our fellowship, supported by the Mellon Foundation, brings together a diverse group of scholars from undergraduates to postgraduates working across these fields in a collaborative and supportive environment.
The Fellowship runs alongside the 2025-26 academic year and is fully virtual. Fellows are expected to attend the regular weekly fellowship meeting (Fridays, 12-2 PM EST), where they will work on writing, reading theory, and engaging the Center’s intellectual community. As an Academic Fellow, you’ll receive mentorship, career development advice, and writing support as you establish yourself either within an academic institution or as an independent educator and researcher. Academic fellows are also offered a research stipend, which is based on their academic cohort:
- College students: $1000
- Master’s students/ Early PhD students: $2000
- Advanced PhD students: $5000
- Recent postdoctoral scholars: $10,000
The deadline to apply for the 2025-26 BBQ+ Academic Fellowship is quickly approaching! To receive full consideration, please submit your application by Sunday, May 18th by midnight EDT.
Dr. Kylla Benes (Director of external scholarships and fellowships, kylla.benes@mso.umt.edu) is happy to assist you with your application!
