The GLI Crowdfunding Campaign Is Still Happening!
Ends November 14th!
| | |
Hello, Franke Fellows!
It's CROWDFUNDING TIME!!! We're raising money to support experiential learning at all phases of our program, including: think seminars, leadership opportunities, Beyond the Classroom Experiences and Capstone Teams!
So we need your help! We invite you to share with your networks! Parents, grandparents, siblings, extended family, friends, neighbors, Griz alums: send the link out to whomever you think might be interested in supporting us. Donations of all amounts are welcome. And thank you in advance for any help you can provide in spreading the word so that we can raise critical funds to support you, our students, in pursuing your passions outside of the classroom.
All the best,
-Gillian and Sandee
We are currently $220 dollars away from the Ice Bucket on Gillian, let's do this GLI!

Topics in Philosophy of Film: Comedy, Melodrama, Moral Perfectionism
- PHL 427 (4 credits) with Prof. Muench
- Seminar: Monday/Wednesday, 12:30-1:50
- Film screenings: (1) Monday, 5:30-7:50; (2) Wednesday, 6:30-8:50 (students are required to attend one film screening each week and are encouraged to attend both)
- This course examines aesthetic, ethical, and metaphysical questions related to film. We will consider what a film is (including the relationship that film has to photography), and what distinguishes film from some of the other arts (such as painting, theater, literature). We will view a number of films that represent human beings in the midst of their lives, engaged in conversations about how to live, and consider how films may help us to improve our understanding of our own lives. Several of the films we will watch are from the 1930s and 1940s, in particular two genres of Hollywood films that the philosopher Stanley Cavell discusses—the remarriage comedy and the melodrama of the unknown woman. Our overall goal in this course will be to think about how film can disclose to us the human condition and our common desire to escape from the everyday into the melodramatic and the comic.

| | | | Looking Ahead: Democracy Summit Info | | |
UM will host its third annual Democracy Summit. This year, we will focus on one of the most vital elements of a thriving democracy: social connection.
The day will highlight the ways relationships sit at the heart of civic life. Students, faculty, staff, and community members will come together to explore how moving from isolation to social connection can strengthen democracy, encourage civic engagement, and bridge divides.
What to expect:
- Conversations on social connection and its role in shaping democracy
- Insights from the science of belonging and community health
- Examples of proven community-building efforts
- Dialogue on technology’s role in shaping relationships
- Sessions on intergenerational connection, collective action, and public health
- Perspectives on how institutions (businesses, non-profits, schools, clinics, libraries and more) can foster stronger social bonds
- Experiences that emphasize creativity and imagination in building social connection
- Sessions on intergenerational connection, collective action, and public health
Together, we’ll imagine, learn, share, and practice the art of social connection – an essential ingredient for addressing polarization and building resilient communities that solve challenges together.

Volunteer UM: Stuff the Bus - Beat the Bobcats: November 15th
- Each year, UM and MSU communities compete to see who can raise the most food for their local food bank. Last year, MSU took the win, but together we raised over 1.3 million pounds and dollars statewide. Let’s bring the trophy back to Griz Nation! All donations go to Missoula Food Bank & Community Center, serving 1 in 5 people in Missoula County – nearly 25,000 individuals and 7,500 households. Help us nourish our friends & neighbors experiencing food insecurity in our community this year and help us CAN the MSU Bobcats off the field! Go Griz!
-
Day: Saturday, November 15th
-
Time: 10:00 am-2:00pm
-
Where: Buses will be parked at grocery stores across Missoula and we need teams of volunteers stationed at each store to collect food and funds, encourage shoppers to donate, and stuff every bus full of nourishment for our neighbors!

Soft Landing Missoula Holiday Helpers: November Ongoing
- The youth we work with during Soft Landing’s school year youth programs range from elementary schools to students in college. These students are from all over the world- DRC, Syria, Afghanistan, Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Eritrea, and more. They are talkative, a bit sassy, and love to swim, listen to music, dance, and make art. The high schoolers and middle schoolers can often be found playing soccer outside after school tutoring, eating pizza, or attending an American football game with their friends. Every year, we make holiday bags for our middle school and high school students, giving them school supplies (they love mechanical pencils), headphones, socks, gift cards, candy, art supplies, books, and more!
- Holiday Gift Bag Ideas!
