From Les:
Well, How Did I Get Here?
Dear Philippians,
October is busy, huh? Pumpkins, Goat Roast, Stewardship kickoff, a visitation and burial, Pride Mass this Thursday evening, hosting Clergy Conference Monday-Wednesday next week, Boocharist/Trunk or Treat, Men's Camping Retreat, and All Saints. Whew... I wonder if any of you are having what I call a Talking Heads moment, asking yourself " "Well, how did I get here?...My God, what have I done!?"("Once in a Lifetime", The Talking Heads) As your rector, I feel I owe you an explanation as to why I keep saying yes to being host for so many extra-parish activities alongside an already busy month.
I was taught in seminary that the Church "does public work at private expense". That has resonated with me over the years. A parish ministers to its geographic parish. Its neighbors are parishioners, even if they are not formally members. All of the things we are busy with this October are about being a forward facing, relational, and welcoming witness of Christ's love. I know that we are all fatigued. I hope that you feel that good kind of fatigue that comes after working really hard for a common pure purpose that glorifies and amplifies God's ever-given Love. I hope that you feel more in love with God, each other, and our neighbors having worked so hard to welcome so many. I have deep gratitude for each of you and your commitment to the mission and ministry of the Church.
I hope to see as many of you as feel so called at the Pride Mass this Thursday at 6:00pm. It is an honor to host this in conjunction with the Diocese and Capitol City Pride festivities that will be going on this coming Saturday downtown. Bishop Wells will celebrate and preach Thursday night, and our choir has stepped up to provide beautiful and deeply meaningful music for this special service. I pray you will come and lift your hearts Thursday evening to our gracious and loving God in the spirit of unity, love, healing and reconciliation.
Sabbath is coming. Just a little while longer, and we all get that rest we need. Thank you all for your devotion and service.
Peace,
Les+
