From the Desk of Darrel Burnett
Executive Director
Now that a full year has flown….er crept by and we anxiously look to the future, we are gently reminded that “COVID changed everything forever and now we must forever change.” Frequent visitors to The Automobile Gallery know that change is part of our DNA. On a weekly basis, our wonderful Pit Crew helps us rotate our collection and displays to keep them fresh so that there is always something new to experience whether you are visiting for the first time or the 100th time.
In the spirit of change I’m pleased to share that we are continuing to add to our unique collection. Just this week, four fabulous automobiles arrived for long-term display at the Gallery. In the weeks ahead, we will be unveiling those great vehicles but, I wanted to share one in particular with you due to its historical significance and relevance to what we have just lived through in the past 12 months.
The Chrysler Airflow arrived alien-like in 1934 in the teeth of the Great Depression. The Airflow was the first Aerodynamic car ever in America and was so far ahead of its time that it flopped worse than Watermelon Oreos. The Airflow’s radical design represented the future at a time when the average American was just trying to get through the day while fearing tomorrow. My point is this; The Great Depression finally ended and so will COVID. We are all here today because there was a tomorrow back then and prosperity was around the corner. I have the same belief in our tomorrow.
|
|
As for the Chrysler Airflow, only a handful remain of the 4,370 produced in 1937, the final year of production. Give us a few days to get ours gussied up and then travel, dare I say, Back to the Future 1930’s Style with The Automobile Gallery. Have a blessed Easter season!

In Russia, it is illegal to drive around in a dirty car. Car washes must make a killing there!
16% of car owners admit to never washing their cars. Hopefully, none of these drivers live in Russia!
