June 2021 Edition
A newsletter for the car enthusiast!

From the Desk of Darrel Burnett
Executive Director

As we launch into the month of June and look back on the month of May, I hope you had a relaxing and blessed Memorial Day weekend while keeping those who gave their lives for our country foremost in your thoughts. For that reason, my years covering the Indianapolis 500 are among my most cherished. There isn’t a feeling that remotely comes close to being on the track right before the green flag drops and witnessing the chills and tears from even the toughest of personalities when our military who made the ultimate sacrifice are honored. That tradition remained intact again this past Sunday despite a limited crowd of 135,000 due to COVID.

I hope you had the opportunity to read my Steering Column in May when I wrote about The Automobile Gallery’s 2001 Dallara Indy Car. Its rich history extended to this year’s 105th running of the Indy 500. 20 years ago, Mark Dismore started the 85th running of the Indy 500 on the inside of Row 2. Ed Carpenter, who was the last to race our Indy Car in competition, duplicated that feat when he put his modern version of the #20 Sonax Indy Car on the inside of Row 2 for this year’s race as he chased his first win at Indy.

Carpenter ran with the leaders until stalling during a pit stop on lap 33 left him fighting his way back from back of the pack. Carpenter’s more than respectable 5th place finish was overshadowed by Helio Castroneves’ record-tying 4th Indianapolis 500 win. Fired just one year ago by Penske Racing, Castroneves roared back with a new team and a new vengeance to stand alone at the top of the racing world. Congratulations to one of racing’s greatest champions and ambassadors.
As the month of June races ahead in its own right, mark your calendars because we are just 18 days away from our 4th annual Cars & Guitars Car Show. Thanks to you and our wonderful friends in the car hobby, the month of June promises to be quite a ride!

Fun Car Fact
There was a monk in the 1200s who predicted the existence of cars. Roger Bacon was a Franciscan friar who lived from around 1214-1292. In one of his documents he wrote: “Cars can be made so that without animals they will move with unbelievable rapidity.” He also predicted airplanes, steamships, submarines and scuba diving suits!

CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES!
Have you been seen activity close to the buildings of The Automobile Gallery recently? Well, your eyes haven't deceived you, we are expanding!

When William "Red" Lewis purchased the former Denil Cadillac building, which is now The Automobile Gallery, he also purchased the neighboring buildings in hopes that we would one day be able to expand, and that is exactly what is happening! Another 8500 square feet of display area is scheduled to open at the end of July.

Our first expansion was completed in 2018, which we fondly refer to as The Automobile Gallery's Truck Garage. The building next to it, an old Packard Dealership and pictured above, will be home to larger events and more of the Gallery's fabulous collection.

We are looking forward to its unveiling!
