From the Desk of Darrel Burnett
Executive Director
“Winds of March, we welcome you,
there is work for you to do.
Work and play and blow all day,
blow the winter wind away.” - Author Unknown
March, like no other month of the year, tends to be a reflection of life itself with its ups and downs, ins and outs. The weather is as unpredictable as a third world dictator, and our collective mood tends to yo-yo in unison with our wardrobe choices as we optimistically waltz out the door wearing a T-shirt as we brainwash ourselves into thinking 40 degrees and sunny is actually warm. Then again, perhaps it is if yesterday was -5. That in a nutshell is the schizophrenic month of March.
Blissfully oblivious to the
temperature, I choose to only have warm thoughts in this the month of March due to its pivotal role in automotive history. As an example, 56 years ago tomorrow, the one-millionth Mustang rolled off the assembly line in Dearborn, MI. Another 9 million Mustangs would follow but the 1966 Mustang remains the most prolific in Mustang history with 607,568 units sold, one of which is on display right here at The Automobile Gallery & Event Center.
As important as the Mustang continues to be, it pales in comparison to the VW Beetle which became a bonafide movie star in March 1969 when the first of six Herbie the Love Bug films debuted in theaters.
Those movies helped propel the VW Beetle to multiply like rabbits (the animal variety not the VW version) with more than 20 million sold by the time the first-generation Beetle ceased production in 2003 after a 65-year run. If you missed the bus on the VW Beetle, VW had a bus waiting. 72 years ago on March 8th, 1950, the VW Bus debuted. As proof of its staying power, this 1950 Dove Blue VW Bus is the oldest known to exist in the world.
18 years to the day following the debut of the VW Bus, the first Pontiac Trans AM arrived March 8th, 1968. At the time, no one knew that the Trans AM was destined to strike gold. You can read all about the ultra-rare Gold Edition Trans Am on display at the Gallery later this month in my Steering Column.

Americans Get the Wrong End of the Stick
U.S. News and World Report states that just 18% of Americans know how to drive a stick shift. That number is quickly decreasing since just 5% of the cars sold in the U.S. are now sold with manual transmissions. Traffic congestion also discourages drivers from buying cars with a manual transmission. On the bright side, automatic transmissions now have as many as 10 speeds making them “clutch” performers!

State Senator Robert Cowles III Donates
an American Treasure
The Automobile Gallery & Event Center is deeply honored to add a stunning 1956 Continental Mark II to our permanent collection through the generosity of Wisconsin State Senator Robert Cowles III. Senator Cowles donated his Mark II to our Gallery in memory of his grandfather and original owner, Dr. Robert Cowles, his father, Robert Cowles II and his brother Jim Cowles.
Dr. Robert Cowles Sr. of Green Bay purchased this stunning Cobalt Blue Metallic Mark II just blocks from The Automobile Gallery at Bird Johns Lincoln Mercury in the winter of 1956 and it remained a treasured member of the Cowles family for three generations. Robert Cowles Jr., an avid car enthusiast, restored his father’s Mark II and showed it at leading car shows around the Midwest throughout the 1980s before Jim Cowles became its caretaker. More than 6 decades later, this Mark II has only travelled 18,743 miles since new making it one of the finest examples in existence. The Automobile Gallery & Event Center will proudly share this family treasure with our visitors from around the world in honor of the Cowles family.
