~March 2023~

From the Desk of Darrel Burnett

Executive Director

Have you ever noticed when you’re driving

that anyone driving slower than you is an idiot

and anyone driving faster than you is a maniac?

George Carlin

I was reminded of comedian George Carlin’s brilliant observation as I prepared to send warm wishes your way on this 1st day of March in the U.S. with snowflakes the size of bathmats falling outside my window. In other words, it’s just a typical month of March in the Midwest. Spring is perpetually peaking around the corner refusing to appear for more than a few minutes at a time while the optimists among us anxiously pine away for the first evidence of dry pavement and sliver of sunshine so we can yank off the car covers and hit the open road.

All this waiting triggered my curiosity. Since 100% of the time the intelligence of drivers is called into question when we are behind the wheel, I began wondering if an official study had ever been conducted assessing the true intelligence of drivers. After all, if seemingly rational human beings could funnel millions of valuable research dollars into publishing studies producing earth-shattering results like these….

Study Shows Beneficial Effect of Electric Fans in Extreme Heat and Humidity - Journal of the American Medical Association

How Different Are Apples and Oranges? - Connecticut Society of American Board Surgeons

Scientists Discover a Difference Between the Sexes - Northwestern University

...then surely someone, somewhere had observed the true intelligence of drivers hadn’t they? I was in luck! I came across a recent study of 2,000 drivers across 22 brands of vehicles conducted in Great Britain. Research showed that drivers of the Skoda, a VW brand manufactured in the Czech Republic, were the most intelligent with an average IQ of 99. Before you rush out the door thinking that you can purchase a Skoda to increase your social standing you’re out of luck. Skodas aren’t available for sale in the U.S.

Skoda Superb IV

Rounding out the top 5 brands in order of intelligence were Suzuki (98.09), Peugeot (98.09), Mini (97.79) and Mazda (95.91) drivers, all with average IQ scores above 95. Mercedes owners came in 8th and the highest American finisher was Ford in 17th place with drivers scoring a more than respectable IQ of 92.75. Before you start looking down on that Smart Car owner in your universe, Smart Cars stopped being produced in 2019 and didn’t qualify for this study. I have to admit, I sure would liked to have seen where Smart Cars stacked up in this study, wouldn’t you?

On the subject of smart cars, you would have been very intelligent to have purchased an AAR ‘Cuda in March 1970 and held on to it. Only 2,724 were ever produced over a 5-week period and one of the finest is in our collection at The Automobile Gallery & Event Center which you’ll see featured in my Steering Column on the 15th!

Fun Car Fact

Ever wonder how the pickup truck got its name? Henry Ford deserves credit for coining the term “pickup.” Henry and his team were the first to notice that farmers were taking Ford’s resilient Model T cars and modifying them for farm use. Seizing on the chance to expand Ford’s product line, Henry and his team rushed to the drawing board and came back with the first completely factory-built pickup truck in 1925. For just $281, farmers and others needing to haul a load could own a Model T Runabout. Ford sold 33,800 Runabouts the first year!

So, why the name pickup? The famous words “some assembly required” unlock the answer. Ford offered a rear "pickup box" separately for Model Ts at their dealer parts department for $25.00. Since the box was literally "picked up" by the customer, the term stuck and 98 years later pickup trucks dominate U.S. highways.

Pickup trucks have become so popular that truck-based platforms now account for a staggering 78.5% of all the vehicles on the road in the U.S. While America has adapted to pickups, not all pickups have adapted to every day life!

Only 3 days left until your favorite craft beer festival!
