Have you ever noticed when you’re driving
that anyone driving slower than you is an idiot
and anyone driving faster than you is a maniac?
George Carlin
I was reminded of comedian George Carlin’s brilliant observation as I prepared to send warm wishes your way on this 1st day of March in the U.S. with snowflakes the size of bathmats falling outside my window. In other words, it’s just a typical month of March in the Midwest. Spring is perpetually peaking around the corner refusing to appear for more than a few minutes at a time while the optimists among us anxiously pine away for the first evidence of dry pavement and sliver of sunshine so we can yank off the car covers and hit the open road.
All this waiting triggered my curiosity. Since 100% of the time the intelligence of drivers is called into question when we are behind the wheel, I began wondering if an official study had ever been conducted assessing the true intelligence of drivers. After all, if seemingly rational human beings could funnel millions of valuable research dollars into publishing studies producing earth-shattering results like these….
Study Shows Beneficial Effect of Electric Fans in Extreme Heat and Humidity - Journal of the American Medical Association
How Different Are Apples and Oranges? - Connecticut Society of American Board Surgeons
Scientists Discover a Difference Between the Sexes - Northwestern University
...then surely someone, somewhere had observed the true intelligence of drivers hadn’t they? I was in luck! I came across a recent study of 2,000 drivers across 22 brands of vehicles conducted in Great Britain. Research showed that drivers of the Skoda, a VW brand manufactured in the Czech Republic, were the most intelligent with an average IQ of 99. Before you rush out the door thinking that you can purchase a Skoda to increase your social standing you’re out of luck. Skodas aren’t available for sale in the U.S.
