From the Desk of Darrel Burnett
Executive Director
I think you will agree that May is the month that signals a fresh start. Grass turns green….trees begin to bud… flowers blossom and, often, so does romance. Reflecting this refreshing outlook, 80% of all marriages take place between the months of May and October which brings me to one of the most important and enduring marriages in history. Exactly 104 years ago today, May 2nd, 1918, General Motors purchased fledgling Chevrolet. Had that not occurred, forget the “Heartbeat of America” Chevrolet wouldn’t have even had a pulse. Can we even fathom a world without Chevrolet?

I wish I could report that it was “love at first sight.” Let’s just agree that it was “love as a last resort.” William C. Durant and J. Dallas Dort had founded General Motors 10 years before and installed Durant as president. Within 2 years, grumpy investors showed Durant the door. Desperate to regain control, Durant formed Chevrolet Motor Company with race car driver Louis Chevrolet in 1911, and then engineered a sneaky reverse merger to acquire a controlling stake in GM. Durant wasted no time in using his new-found power to reclaim the president’s seat….. only to be ousted again in 1919. Durant left. Chevrolet stayed. More than a century removed from the scorched earth of the early days, today’s Chevrolet represents a staggering 50% of GM's total global sales and has for a long time. If you want to see what that looks like spelled out……..that’s $61,000,000,000 a year in sales!

Just like Chevrolet picked up the pieces, we did too at The Automobile Gallery & Event Center about two years ago when we inherited baskets, buckets, and a bandaged up 1971 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. This project wasn’t a restoration, it was a resuscitation. Here’s a quick glance at the phenomenal transformation you will see in my Steering Column later this month.

The Automobile Gallery & Event Center takes great pride in showcasing young and old. On this day it happened all at the same time. 5-year-old Lena Enderby fell in love with our 1918 Dort race car which was born 99 years before she was!

Honoring a True American Trailblazer – Janet Guthrie!
The number 29 plays a significant role at this year’s 106th running of the Indianapolis 500. The race will be run May 29th. Exactly 45 years ago to the day, May 29th, 1977, Janet Guthrie became the first woman in history to race in the Indy 500. As fate would have it, engine problems intervened, and she finished….29th on the 29th.
Now 84, Janet Guthrie’s racing helmet and suit are on permanent display at the Smithsonian. Janet has been inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame and the Sports Car Club of America Hall of Fame. The Automobile Gallery & Event Center salutes this great American trailblazer!

Packard was the first car company to put power seats in an automobile. In a constant battle with Cadillac for the title of America’s greatest luxury car, Packard offered power seats in its entire lineup of cars way back in 1947, a full 6 years after being the first company to offer power windows in 1941.
