From the Desk of Darrel Burnett
Executive Director
“There is joy in work. There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something.” Henry Ford
As far as summer is concerned, October is the end of the line. As it relates to The Automobile Gallery and the world of automobiles, October is the “beginning” of the line. You likely have never given this a moment’s thought but, this coming Thursday, October 7th marks the 108th anniversary of the assembly line at Ford Motor Company. The assembly line did more than change the automotive industry, it changed the world we live in…. and it still is more than a century later. Virtually everything we touch, experience, and use 24 hours a day comes to us at hyper speed off an assembly line. Think about it, from Amazon to Altoids, cell phones to cellophane, popcorn to paint, T-Shirts to Tabasco Sauce….everything flies off the assembly line in milliseconds.

Ford Motor Company Assembly Line circa 1913
|
|
Sophisticated it wasn’t. Effective it was. October 6th, 1913, it took more than 12 hours to assemble just one of Henry’s Model Ts as it passed through 140 workers and 280 hands. When the doors opened the following morning a crude rope and winch system slashed production time to just 93 minutes! That very morning the assembly line was born and, in many respects, so was the America we enjoy today. Now, a sophisticated modern-day vehicle is completely assembled and chucked off the assembly line in an unbelievable 45 seconds with assembly line champion Toyota spitting out cars like Reese’s Pieces at a rate of 13,400 cars a day.

Unfortunately, not everything about the month of October is romantic and rosy in the annals of Ford history. October 15th, 1978, Henry Ford II decided that Lee Iacocca’s 54th birthday was the perfect day to fire him as President of the company. It was a move that would later haunt Henry II. Brash and brilliant, Iacocca was about to become a household name known around the world. We celebrate Mr. Iacocca’s birthday October 15th with this month’s edition of The Steering Column when I share a heartwarming story about the latest addition to our wonderful collection!

Sad but true: The auto industry used sperm whale oil as an ingredient in automatic transmission fluid. Automakers like General Motors continued to use it from World War II until 1973. That year, Congress passed the Endangered Species Act, which banned its use.

It is with great sadness that we had to cancel our Inaugural AUTOberfest. We were truly looking forward to having his event -- watch for it in 2022!
