Skyway twinning project in design phase
The design phase for the twinning of the Garden City Skyway will take place over the next 19 months with construction expected to start in 2027, City Council heard in an update from the Ministry of Transportation.
Once the twinning is completed, the new bridge deck will carry traffic while the original bridge is rehabilitated. The project will also include a pier protection system for both bridge decks designed to resist the full impact of a vessel collision to ensure public safety.
Construction will impact roads around the Skyway, including Dieppe, Dunkirk, Cushman, Bunting roads and Queenston Street. However, the project team will use strategies, such as staged construction and leaving one lane of traffic open, to minimizing disruptions. Residents can stay up-to-date with advance notice for road closures and other disruptions, project information and a contact form posted online at quegcs.ca.
There’s also a public information session to be held in 2026 where residents can view the bridge design, road realignments, landscape plans as well as ask questions and share concerns.

Victorian-era fire hall up for heritage designation
One of the few remaining Victorian-era fire halls in the province is intended to be designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.
City Council directed that a notice of intention be issued to designate 143 - 153 St. Paul Crescent, a commercial block in Western Hill, in accordance with the Ontario Heritage Act. City Council will consider adopting a heritage designation by-law for the properties 30 days after the notice and will direct any objections to the Ontario Land Tribunal.
Together, the properties are well-preserved examples of a late 19th-century commercial block constructed between circa 1880 and 1887 and includes the Neptune Fire Hall, the Voisard Block and the McGuire-Voisard building. The fire hall building is a rare surviving example of a Victorian-era fire hall in St. Catharines with only a few comparable examples in Ontario.
| | City Council also directed the City to issue a notice of intention to designate 3 Elizabeth Street in accordance with the Ontario Heritage Act. The property, known as the Begy House, is a well-preserved example of a vernacular Gothic Revival residence constructed circa 1880. The house retains a high degree of architectural integrity, particularly through its decorative woodwork, gable-fronted massing, and distinctive painted detailing. | |
