GRAND LODGE TRUSTEES
GRAND LODGE TRUSTEES EXPLAINED!!!!

The Grand Lodge Trustees are a critical part of the governing organization of
Freemasonry and are vital to its lawful existence. The Grand Lodge is a corporation chartered by the New Jersey legislature (in 1869!). As such we are subject to New Jersey law, including the Non-Profit Corporations Act and the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act. We are exempt from most income taxes and property taxes by our qualifying under Section 501(c)(10) of the Internal Revenue Code. These state and Federal laws are at times superior to the By-Laws and practices of the organization.

Seeking Ideas for Expanding Scholarship Eligibility!
The Grand Lodge offers four scholarships each year over two sets of eligibility criteria. Awards are payable in installments over four consecutive semesters subject to attendance and grade requirements. The rate of eligible applicants and completed studies has been low, even before the COVID conditions. The Trustees are considering changing eligibility criteria to make the program more successful.

Please email suggestions for changes in the program to R.W. Richard Schmidt at [email protected].

The current eligibility criteria are:

Undergraduate Scholarship:
  • Applicable to high school seniors only enrolling in a two year institution of higher learning; four year colleges do not qualify.
  • Natural or step-child or grandchild of living or deceased New Jersey Mason in good standing.
  • High school GPA of 2.0 (4.0 scale) over two latest completed years.
  • Must maintain 2.0 college GPA and 12 credits per semester for subsequent installments.
  • Payable to school, not student or parent.

Graduate Scholarship:
  • Applicable to New Jersey resident college graduates enrolling in a post-graduate program.
  • Natural or step-child or grandchild of living or deceased New Jersey Mason in good standing.
  • Must maintain 2.0 college GPA and 12 credits per semester for subsequent installments.
  • Payable to school, not student or parent.

Masons In Action
We are very proud of all our lodges and members who have been working diligently serving their families, fraternity, and communities.

Please continue to send articles and photos of your outstanding work to [email protected]
My journey as a Freemason has been an interesting one. I am someone who grew up in New Jersey. I did not have any familial or social connection to Freemasonry. My first real exposure to Masonry came by way of my father-in-law, Seward. He died back in 2000, and I remember the brothers from his lodge coming to my mother-in-law's house and asking if we would like Masonic Services at his funeral. They handled that rough time with caring and sensitivity. I still remember them coming to the funeral home and performing the Rite and it planted a seed that would stay with me.

Shortly after that time, I entered the field of law enforcement and moved to the Philadelphia area of New Jersey and the thoughts of Freemasonry went to the back burner. Over the course of the next fifteen years or so, I relocated to the Washington DC area, raised my 2 kids with my wife, and occasionally thought about Masonry. For most of my career, I worked the evening shift. During the times I thought about becoming a mason, I felt greatly hindered by the fact that most lodges had their meetings at night, making me feel as though that I was not really able to consider getting involved in the craft.

A little over 8 years ago, my mother-in-law, Barbara, had been battling terminal cancer, and had been placed on hospice. My wife had been her caretaker and advocate during her illness and treatment, but due to the fact that her condition was quickly worsening, we decided that Barbara needed her to move in. Doing this meant she needed to take the kids and move to NJ. From the onset, we committed to having a commuter marriage for at least a year, providing a consistent education for our children without a midyear change in schools. Unfortunately, Barbara lost her battle in September 2013, shortly after my children started school in her home town.

At this time in my life, I was making weekly treks of either driving from MD to NJ, or my wife and kids driving from NJ to MD. My son and daughter grew to love being in their grandmother's house, the educational situation was better suited for our kids, and they became more involved in social activities in their new community. So week after week, the treks continued. Most often it was me that would end to up driving to NJ due to logistics; it was much easier for me to drive up every Thursday night after work than it was for my wife to come down during Friday rush hour with 2 kids, who then missed out on school social events.

Every week, as I would exit Route 17 onto Terrace Avenue in Hasbrouck Heights, I would drive by the Free and Accepted Masons sign for Euclid Lodge #136. It told me that they met on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month, days I now had off, and I realized that I could attend meetings at that Lodge. Additionally, I learned that a member of the church that we were attending was also a member of Euclid Lodge, and as the saying goes, if you want to be a mason, ask a mason.

Flash Forward to 1/6/21. This was a very tragic, harrowing day for me and my family. As a lieutenant in the United States Capitol Police, I was assigned to be one of the few Civil Disturbance Unit commanders and had approximately 30 officers under me. We were grossly outnumbered, and ill prepared for that day. Later on that day, I witnessed one of our own, Officer Brian Sicknick collapse and need immediate medical assistance. Unfortunately, he succumbed to stroke the next day.

Brian, like many US Capitol Officers, was a New Jersey native. In the days that followed this tragedy, condolences, letters and cards began to pour in. I saw an edict from the MW Robert V. Monacelli making Brian a posthumous honorary mason. His father and brother are members of Philo Lodge # 243. I was so proud to be a small part of this incredible fraternity. To see this letter and understand what it means was very important to me. I immediately printed out the edict and posted it on the wall where the makeshift memorial grew outside of the detail office that Brian and I worked in.

It was at that point that I reached out to the Grand Master. I wanted him to know how much that edict meant to me. I also wanted him to know that there was an active New Jersey Freemason working in the Nation’s Capitol.

As the anniversary of that fateful day approaches every year, I am reminded of one of the core tenants of our craft - Making good men better. I am proud of my actions on that day. I am proud of the steps that I took to protect the people that were under my charge. I am proud that I am a part of this fraternity that instills the qualities that were overtly lacking in the people that perpetrated that horrible day. These are qualities that many people in this nation are lacking and we are trying to bring back to them.

As I look toward the next part of my life and my longing to do more in this world and in Freemasonry. God, the grand architect of the universe, has laid the path and the means for me to do so. I think of my journey over the last 20 or so years that have brought me where I am today. I cannot think of a finer group of people that I want to experience what is to come with. God Bless Freemasonry and the principles and people that hold it together.

Very Respectfully,
Dennis J. Kelly
