The competition is heating up for the Gibraltar Challenge!
If you've registered for the 100 mile or new 100k+ Gibraltar course, then you're in! Gibraltar road is known by locals as the "Santa Barbara Alpe d'Huez" due to its similarity to the famous Tour de France climb. Check out this video from Stage 3 of the 2016 Tour of California featuring the Gibraltar Challenge.
For the 2nd year, Gibraltar Wealth Management and Patrick Flood of UBS Bank have generously sponsored this scenic and grueling time trial up Gibraltar Road where riders gain more than 3,000 feet of elevation in only 7 miles.
How does it work? Time splits will be recorded at the top and bottom of the climb and awards will be presented at the awards ceremony at Leadbetter Beach on Saturday afternoon. The three award categories for the 100 mile and new 100K + Gibraltar include Overall, Age Group, and Team.
Overall: 1st place male and female winners of the time trial will receive the official KOM jerseys, free entry to next year's event and prizes from our sponsors. 2016 winners Chris Braden (35:19) and Drea Schettler (41:44) are back to defend their titles.
Age Group: 1st and 2nd place awards, both male and female will be presented in the following age categories:
61 and older
Team: The team competition is heating up with 2016 winners Echelon Santa Barbara gearing up to defend their title in the team category. Watch out for previous year's winners Velo Club La Grange and Killer B Fitness to make a run for the team win as well.
