12% of school aged children have a learning disability and 1% of all kids born in 2011 will have autism.
These statistics are frightening for anyone with an interest in children. Despite the fact the United States is one of the most evolved countries in the world we are doing a terrible job of raising healthy children. Too often I hear parents lament the fact children do not come with a set of instructions at birth or an owner's manual. Of course they don't....or do they?
At Active Healing, Inc. we recognize all children must go through a sequential developmental process to properly mature both their brain and their body. This sequence is known as an Ontogeny of Human Neurological Development. This Ontogeny covers the 20% of child development that stimulates 80% of neurological growth. In order for this process to unfold as nature intended a child must spend the vast majority of his or her first 8 months of life on their stomach followed by getting up on all fours for the next four months before begining to walk. Unfortunately, because of the wide variety of companies selling vibrating chairs, bouncy seats and activity stations our children are not getting enough belly time. Instead we are jumping our children straight to standing before they have developed the proper righting reflexes, core strength, depth perception and spinal structure that would allow them to do this own their own. Once a child has the ability to do this on their own they generally will not tolearate any of these devices.
What parents are given at their pediatrician's office is generally the reassurance that based on growth charts and miminal clincal observation that their child is typically developing. This may be in spite of the fact their child never belly crawled and was walking at 8 months of age both of which are clear indicators of future challenges. At Active Healing we feel that parents should leave these appointments with the understanding of how important belly time is to future academic, social and emotional health.
Pediatricans need to engage in a campaign that equals their "back to sleep" campaign on behalf of the importance of age specific developmental milestones. Until then, Active Healing will continue it's mission to educate parents about the importance of these milestones in both establishing or recovering overall health and wellness.

Testimonial/Hunter F by Paula F.
We have been working with Sargent for less than 5 months now and my son's teacher and I have seen HUGE changes in my son. His teacher told me that the third grade is a year of huge emotional growth in kids but she has seen more growth in Hunter than is typical. He came into her class as the most immature student, she described him as a baby, and he is now her most mature student. His peers look up to him and they all want him on their team when they work in groups. She says that he laughs more in class and is more social. He's able to break down problems and solve them on his own. I haven't gotten one call from the principal about playground problems. He doesn't take things so personally so he's able to disagree with his peers and walk away instead of getting into a fight about it.
His baseball coach wanted to know what we did to him this year. He's physically more coordinated, he can rifle a baseball, run faster to the bases. He can follow the drills now. He's interacting more with his teammates. Now, he can practice his skills and improve his game.
I don't see any anxiety in my son now. He seems comfortable in his own skin. I see him able to talk to adults much more easily, his friendships with his peers are closer, he laughs more, jokes more, he doesn't ask for my help as often yet, he asked me to join him on a field trip for the first time. He's learned to tie his shoes, he does his homework on his own, his grades have improved and I have not heard him complain about school or his peers in months. With the help of Sargent Goodchild's program at Active Healing my son isn't being held back any more.

Hunter graduated (see picture above) after 8 months in the program. Paula recently updated me. Hunter is now is now in the fourth grade and made honor roll this past term. She called his teacher to find out how much extra help he had needed and she said, "none, he did it all himself."
