It is Virtual Vacation Day Almost April Fools Day and Sunday #2 of Share and Pair Sundays. Perhaps at this point almost everyone would like a virtual vacation. April Fools comments -- if April Fools was used before April 1 the response was "April Fools is coming and your the biggest fool running; and if used after April 1 the response was "April Fools is past and you are the biggest fool at last". Share and Pare Sundays got off to a slow start last weekend, perhaps more folks will join us this weekend!

Lots to contemplate -- atter you sit back; relax, pour a glass of Glenora's finest and enjoy this week's edition.

Virtual Vacatioin Day April Fools Day (almost) Share and Pair Sunday

2025/03/30

VVol. 30 No. 3 – 2025          Virtual Vacation Day                 April Fools          Share & Pair           2025/03/30.

The Glenora Gazette

Est. 13 April 1994

The sky over the vineyards of Glenora and the shores of Seneca is cloudy and damp on this last Sunday morning of the first quarter of 2025. The temperature reaches 44 degrees with a feel like reading, due to the humidity being 88% and a slight breeze, three miles per hour coming from the south. Lake temperatures: Keuka continues its upward climb, now 34 degrees. If history is an indicator the lake will reach its maximum temperature of the season around August first. Seneca – still no reports that we can locate, however we are in hopes that with the share of the proceeds from the SenecaLake Wine Trail’s Wine and Experience Auction that the Seneca Lake Pure Water group will find a way to report the temperature of Seneca in the same manner that the Keuka Lake folks do.

In the vineyard: We believe that we can report without knocking on wood that the vines have made through the winter without suffering any bud damage of consequence. So, at this point we have the potential for a good (size) 2025 harvest. However, we are remined of the chicken, the egg, and hatching saying. We received a notice from the Finger Lakes Grape program that they will be sending their Vineyard news reports for the 2025 growing season soon, which is always interesting and informative. Activities in the vineyard consist of pruning, brush chopping, trellis work/repair, and herbicide applications. We always feel that this is the most intense time of year as all these projects need to be completed before bud break. If not, there is the possibility of breaking the small buds from the vine and thus losing part of the potential crop.

In the cellar: Bottling continues with both custom wines being bottled along with our 2024 Sauvignon Blanc. We are also selecting wines that we will enter in various upcoming competitions and for benefit programs. While we should not be, we are skeptical of some of the results of some of these competitions as it seems odd to us that a wine that receives a double gold in one competition receives a bronze in another competition. But wines that win awards and have medals displayed around the neck of the bottle are important to customers, distributors, and retailers. We have often thought of having a competition named the Waterfalls competition which we would run and award the medals.

When you visit the retail shop next you will see that some of the food displays, accessories, and clothing items have been changed which will allow us to offer more local foods and locally made items to be displayed and sold. This not only gives the retail shop a new look, like moving the furniture around in your house, but also allows us to use metrics garnered from our participation in the Farm Credit Benchmark survey which shows the income per linear foot of retail space.

There are signs of Spring appearing at Glenora. Robins are starting to build nests in the rafters, including the one who return every year trying to fly through windows, the bulks that the maintenance team planted last fall are sending green shots from the ground, and the maintenance team is pruning trees and shrubs. With the predicted Spring showers and warn temperatures for this coming week, we expect to smell the aroma of fresh cut grass by weeks end.

As there should be, once again there has been lots of discussion about recycling lately with some claims of some recycling materials not being recycled but placed in landfills. Wanting to be sure our recyclable materials were going in the right direction Production Manage Tracey checked with our recycling company. The report is here-very interesting. https://www.bing.com/videos/riverview/relatedvideo?q=casella+zero+sort+recycling+list&mid=153FC478ACEFA313C3C8153FC478ACEFA313C3C8&mcid=06B39387E4F74620B316DD01904DBBA6&FORM=VIRE

Thought for the week                                                                           Spring

In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt." -

What were you doing 2 years ago in March of 1997?

vVol. 9 No. 3                 National Frozen Food Month--Ice Wine         9 March 1997

Glenora Gazette

March winds, April showers, May flowers--we certainly have the first third of this equation in place. Bright skies in the east this AM-looks like it will be a beautiful sunrise!

Team Glenora once again traveled across the fine State of New York promoting our products and doing wine tastings. John covered the central part of the State and made major scores in the Ithaca area. At Taughannock Farms he placed 9 different labels on the wine list. Last Sunday the editor of the Gazette did a tasting, at Glenora, for a two members of the sales staff at Tripphammer Wines & Spirits; John followed up with a visit to the account this week and another score.

The Winemaking Department jumped into the sales arena as well. Doug did a tasting on Friday evening at Lake Country in Bath. Steve spent Wednesday afternoon in the Ithaca market, and on Friday he was in the Syracuse market, moving north to Oswego in the afternoon to a tasting Friday evening (which he almost forgot) to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.

On Saturday afternoon we were visited by John Zellar of Cicero Spirits, Inc. John has been a supporter of New York wines and has recently added several of our wines to his shop, however he had never visited Glenora. Like all who visit Glenora he was impressed with the facility, the wines, and the cleanliness of the operation. We now have another Glenora prophet!!!!

Last week’s question of the week “Why would anyone give Hillary Rodwoman Clinton an Emmy/Oscar/whatever” brought out the creativity of several members of Team Glenora as well as mail-in responses (Jim Hazlitt) and e-mails from CO. #00019 (cellar dweller Sue Long) gave 10 great reasons--however only two can be printed. #1 She is a magician--she makes Whitewater files disappear like magic. #2 Her hair--She changes hair styles more often than Marcia Clark--see Sue for the other 8 reasons.

We should have overflow crowds at this summer’s Jazz concerts as this week we reached an agreement with Time Warner Cable to be a co-promoter of 1997 Jazz Greats at Glenora. They will provide us with television ads for each show and also will be producing a television show previewing the concerts that will be “shot” at Glenora. The artists have not yet been signed but we are in negations with several including a couple of “names” that could really impact the crowds and wine sales.

Lots of Glenora activity in Penn Yan. Glenora’s Cabernet still maintains its place of honor at Sarrisans in the cuvinet--the only place in Yates County where a New York Wine (Glenora) is “on tap." On Wednesday evening Glenora has been invited to do a tasting at Lloyd’s Pub. Lloyd’s tastings are well attended and will offer us the opportunity to present many of our new wines, as well as “show-off” the new Lake Series packaging. If you haven’t been to either of these fine establishments lately make an effort to do so--we can’t expect them to support us it we don’t support them.

Question of the Week:           What does the white paint spot on a bottle of Port                                                                                       indicate?

           Thought for the Week:           Perception

People are disturbed not by things that happen, but by their opinion of the things that happen.
