Happy Birthday Maria Montessori!

As we celebrate the birthday of Maria Montessori on August 31, we are reminded of the tremendous contribution she made to education. Born 149 years ago, Montessori was trained not as an educator, but rather as a medical doctor who later studied philosophy, psychology, and anthropology. Dr. Montessori viewed education as an “aid to life” serving the development of the whole child, and integrating the spiritual and the intellectual. She recognized that the way to creating a peaceful world was through the child – work that earned her three nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.

You can learn more about Maria Montessori, by visiting the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) website .
BRINGING WISDOM TO LIGHT
Dear Parents,

I would like to introduce myself as School Counselor. I am very excited to have the privilege of working with your family here at St. Catherine’s Montessori. As a counselor, I am here to support students with their intellectual, social, and emotional growth.

My role is to provide a guidance curriculum to assist students in developing essential life skills. In addition, I provide interventions for immediate personal, social, and emotional concerns. Ms. Tracy, the guides, and I will work together as a team to assist students with their diverse needs so that they can reach their full intellectual potential. My role also extends to the campus staff, parents, and community to help the educational, personal, and social development of students.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or are in need of information and/or resources.

OUR FAITH IN ACTION
Sister Theresa Josephine, OP is busily preparing the Atrium with materials to help guide the children in their spiritual and moral growth as they develop their unique relationships with God. She has just finished hand-painting miniature statues of the 12 apostles and Jesus for the Last Supper presentation. They are perfectly sized for Primary students to place in the Cenacle (Last Supper diorama).

SPORTS
Come Out and Support Our Student Athletes!

Soccer and volleyball seasons are about to start! Check out the school website for game details and come out and support our student athletes. Sports schedules have been posted on the school website.
Sports in High School

One of the questions that parents and students frequently ask about the SCM High School is “what about sports?” Last year, our high school was offered the opportunity to participate in sports at St. Francis Episcopal. Because St Francis competes independently, SCM High School students and St. Francis High School students have joined together to play team sports. This year, three of our students are participating in volleyball—Monday, August 26 was the first game of the season!
INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Ms. Kristen's Class Goes Shopping
One of the responsibilities a Lower Elementary student has is preparing weekly snacks for their class. Students are divided into teams and are assigned a week during the school year to plan the menu, prepare the grocery list, and then go out shopping. The first snack team went on their first "Going Out" this week.

"Going Out" is the term used to describe excursions outside of school taken by small groups of students. These activities begin at the Lower Elementary level as the Montessori experience expands beyond the classroom.
