Over Presidents’ Day weekend, 17 St. Catherine’s Montessori guides and administrators attended the  2019 AMI/USA Refresher Course & Workshops in New Orleans. AMI/USA supports the objectives of the Association Montessori Internationale in the United States by helping children to attain their full potential according to the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori.

This annual, four-day gathering gives our leadership and teaching staff the opportunity to connect with other Montessorians, examine current education practices, and reflect on their knowledge and understanding of Montessori instruction through networking activities, lectures, presentations, and breakout sessions.

Attending the AMI/USA Refresher Course is an important part of the guide experience at SCM.
It was an affirmation of the work that happens here every day and a reminder of what's truly important – supporting the development of the whole person and cultivating the intrinsic joy of learning Amy Lindsey, High School Guide
This professional development opportunity is made possible in part by the generosity of the St. Catherine’s community and their contributions to the  SCM Fund . These gifts help cover the costs of attending the refresher course, including workshop registrations, hotel accommodations, and continuing education credits.

Beyond the annual refresher course, SCM Fund contributions help support AMI membership fees, courses in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, program specific trainings in math, languages, college admissions, and music, among other topics.

ADVANCING THE MISSION
Meet SCM’s New Real Estate Rebate Partner
SCM parent Ashley Graves is our newest partner in the St. Catherine’s Montessori Real Estate Rebate Program. Started by alumni parents Wendy Wight and Jim Meyn in 2015, this valued fundraising source has raised nearly $12,000 for the school. Now under Ashley’s stewardship, the program will provide St. Catherine’s with 0.5 to 1% of the commission from a purchase or sale of an SCM family home. Additionally, when SCM families refer clients from outside the SCM community, the school will receive 0.25 to 0.5% of those commissions.

Steps 4 Students 2019
On Saturday, February 16 the St. Catherine’s Montessori community joined with other Catholic school families to participate in the annual Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston's Steps 4 Students 5K Run/Walk. Team SCM members ran, walked, and snoozed, all in support of SCM’s Tuition Assistance Program. Decked out in our signature pink race day tees, our team of 411 made quite an impact, winning the prize for “Biggest Buzz.”

Once again, we were the overall fourth-largest team, and the largest among participating independent schools. St. Catherine’s is also the #1 fundraiser among independent schools - having raised $2,225 in donations without the support of a parish community.  We have three days and $6,788 to reach our total goal of $16,000.  Give online now through this Friday, February 22 .

¡Fiesta Cubana!
7 Tickets Available
Forget Havana, where stilettos, guayaberas and deep red lipstick with matching 1950s Oldsmobiles rule the night. Let’s instead go to Cuba’s countryside, “el campo”, to enjoy and celebrate the very roots of Cuban culture with an authentic “Guateque”; an informal gathering of good friends who come together to drink rum, play guitar, smoke cigars and enjoy delicious homestyle food. So put on your most comfortable pair of jeans, your most broken-in pair of boots, a super comfy flannel that you can Salsa the night away in (it’s not a true Cuban party without dancing!!), a cowboy hat, and then you will officially be a Cuban Guajiro and ready to join this party! ¡Azúcar! — Be ready to enjoy an authentic Cuban pig roast, with all the typical Cuban sides (vegetarian and non-pork options will also be available). Signature Drinks: Mojitos and Cuba Libres. A cigar bar, a DJ, with lots of Cuban music. The opportunity to play dominos, a favorite Cuban pastime And...for anyone who would like to watch how the pig is cooked in the Caja China, we welcome you to come early!

INSIDE and OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Lower Elementary Cooking Day
Last Thursday, Ms. Kristen's weekly cooking team made quesadillas, rice with cilantro, beans, and chocolate-dipped strawberries! The students plan every aspect of the meal from the menu selection, budget preparation, grocery shopping, cooking, and clean up. The grocery store trip is a planned Going Out, an out-of-school activity that begins at the Lower Elementary level, which gives students the opportunity to learn outside the four walls of the classroom, connect to the world around them, and gain responsibility.
