February 2nd, 2022
This month we recognize the experiences and accomplishments of the Black community. Our students will be studying and observing black history through food drives, books, and research. The purpose of this month is to empower the oppressed, inspire future generations, and call on every member of society to treat all humans with fairness and dignity.
A LOOK INTO OUR COMMUNITIES
First Plane (Ages 0-6)
Ms. Sterling's Primary class kicked off the month by reading together We March by Shane W. Evans and I Am Enough by Grace Byers. This month they will be using a variety of flesh color crayons to create self drawings and celebrate how beautiful everyone is!

Second Plane (Ages 6-12)
Students in Ms. Hannah's class were inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr. to host food and clothing drives. The drives will be from February 14th to 25th. Collection boxes will be available near the front door. Click on the image to see what the students wrote.
Third Plane (Ages 12-18)
High School recently took a trip to New York where they were able to visit the Weeksville Heritage Center, a free Black community established before the Civil War. They also took a tour of Plymouth Church, an important abolitionist center and Underground Railroad stop. Students were able to climb down into the area where runaway slaves were temporarily sheltered on their journey, and sit in the same pew that Abraham Lincoln sat in when he visited the church.

REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDRESS
Sister Edna Ann Hebert
From its foundation in 1966, St. Catherine’s had a cross section of socio-economic groups, racial diversity, and children with a wide range of mental, physical, and social abilities. As in true embodiment of the Dominican spirit, all children were included and guided to show God’s love for one another and to embrace everyone’s uniqueness.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT
Children love coming to the Atrium during the week and one of the main reasons is Sr. Theresa Josephine. She goes above and beyond everyday for the students at St. Catherine's.

When asked about her favorite part of working with the children in the Atrium, she says, “to help the child be in relationship with God, in a very effective way. Seeing a child enter a relationship with God is the best part. Seeing God guiding them. The main teacher is God, it’s not me. I am the matchmaker.”
PARENT SERVICE ORGANIZATION (PSO)
PSO Class Potlucks are back! Typically held at the beginning of the year, these adult-only events are a fun way for the parents of each class to get to know each other.

Click the link to sign up to host the Potluck for your child’s class. To accommodate people who are more comfortable gathering outside, it is preferable that hosts have plenty of outdoor space available (and it is encouraged to ask some parents to bring chairs for additional seating!).

We know that everyone has different comfort levels with larger gatherings, so we want to reiterate that the PSO Potlucks are completely optional

During this time apart, we are all missing the wonderful SCM community, and we look forward to having this opportunity to gather together once again.
