BRINGING WISDOM TO LIGHT
MONTESSORI EDUCATION IS KEY TO SUCCESS IN COLLEGE

Dear Parents,

I just returned from a counselor visit to Southwestern University and am happy to report that what I learned affirmed what we are doing at all levels of St. Catherine’s.

A faculty panel was asked to describe what skills students need for college. These were their responses:

Time management – how to plan and pace work during the week and how to focus on quality of study rather than quantity.

Confidence to advocate for themselves – students need to be unafraid to talk to adults, especially their professors.

Independence – how to generate one’s own plans and possibilities.

Reading & Writing – being comfortable with a high volume of reading, writing and critical thinking, not the regurgitation of facts that is so common in many high school curricula.

Moderate amount of AP courses only - many students are arriving on campuses “mentally exhausted” from high school and colleges have to “undue that damage.” Another comment related to high school was, “Why are students in such a hurry? We need to slow down.”

COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS
Montessori Night School is TOMORROW, Thursday, January 30 . The evening is an opportunity for parents to see Montessori work in action, as Primary and Lower Elementary children will show you their classrooms and demonstrate the lessons they are learning. In Mr. Chris’s and Mr. Snow’s Upper Elementary classrooms the students will host a state fair and a geography fair.

The Primary classrooms will be open from 5:30 to 6:45 PM for parents to spend a brief period in their child’s environment. The Upper Elementary classrooms will be open from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Lower Elementary parents will visit the classrooms between 6:00 and 7:50 PM in two 50-minute groups. Lower EL parents received emails with information on how to sign up for your group time slot.

Free childcare will be available in the gym for currently-enrolled SCM students in Primary and above. Parents with multiple children are encouraged to use the childcare while they visit each classroom with their children individually.

High School Corner
Welcome back to the High School Corner!

As some of you may have already seen in last week’s edition of The Globe , the St. Catherine’s High School will be hosting this year’s Pancake Breakfast! For those who may be unfamiliar, the Pancake Breakfast is an event hosted every year after Steps 4 Students where we sell delicious pancakes, savory bacon, fresh fruit, and piping-hot coffee. If your mouth is watering just thinking about all that delicious food after a long marathon, then click this link to RSVP for the Pancake Breakfast and rest easy in the knowledge that you have a guaranteed meal waiting for you after your run. We will be holding the event in the St. Catherine’s gymnasium, and we want to have enough room for everybody!

This year the proceeds from the event will go towards our class trip to Hawaii. All year we have been studying American history in Humanities class and biodiversity in our Environmental Science class. Our trip to Hawaii will serve as the capstone to all the work we have done in both of these classes and will provide an opportunity for us to make connections to work we have done across all our other classes as well. It will be an opportunity for us to put all our accumulated knowledge into practice. If you would like to get any further details on the event you can contact us at [email protected]

Thank you for reading; we hope you’ll be back to read more next week!
