High School Sits for Advanced Placement Exams
This time of year, it is not uncommon to see High School students diligently studying and staying up late hitting the books preparing for end of year exams. The SCM High School students, just like every other High School student in the country, are preparing for Advanced Placement exams (commonly referred to as AP Exams). AP gives students the chance to tackle college-level work while they're still in high school and earn college credit and placement. Students can opt out of taking the AP exam and still earn high school credit for graduation purposes.

This semester SCM High School students took the following AP courses: AP Computer Science Principles, AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP Art Design 3-D, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Environmental Science, and AP Statistics. Students will sit for all of the exams, except for statistics. They have been preparing for these exams in the most unusual of circumstances—a global pandemic! Today starts three weeks of testing for these students—we wish them the best of luck on these exams.

Wednesday Wellness: A Message From the SCM counselor, Sandra Espinosa
Dear St. Catherine’s Community,

I hope your weekend was filled with moments of family connectedness, relaxation and a deep knowing that your efforts – even the smallest ones – are moving things forward for the better. As we enter the second week of May, two months into the world of virtual home-schooling, many of you have found a rhythm that works best for you and your family (or at least one that you have deemed, “good enough”!) Others may be continually challenged by the complicated juggling act of working from home while keeping kids engaged in their school work, keeping them entertained, or preventing the fifth meltdown of the day. I’m taking some deep belly breaths for you in spirit, and for any parent who is struggling to cope with the challenges of increased family time at home. This is not easy, and for many it can feel like the movie Groundhog Day – being stuck in the same scenario day after day.

REMINDER: Free Parent Support Group – What’s Next: Families Recovering and Thriving from a Pandemic
Throughout May, Dr. Kimberly Harrison, clinical psychologist and founder of The Conative Group , is hosting a free weekly support group via Zoom for parents. Topics with cover some of the many issues parents face working from home, managing virtual classrooms, dealing with emotions relating to the pandemic, and reconfiguring summer plans as many vacations and summer camps have been cancelled. Sessions will include practical guidance for next steps during these uncertain times. The meetings are free, open to all and no registration is needed.

CHECKING IN WITH...
Ms. Jacinta Edussuriya
Ms. Jacinta is doing well! Her children take great care of her and make sure all of her necessities are delivered to her front door. Besides keeping busy in her role as Infant through Elementary Program Coordinator, she has been walking almost three miles a day and live-streaming yoga classes.

For Mother’s Day she enjoyed a sumptuous dinner with her daughter and her family. They even arranged for a Zoom call so she could see her Chicago family.

She misses being around the energy of SCM and seeing everyone. Ms. Jacinta particularly misses seeing the happy faces of children playing in the Primary Courtyard!
HIGH SCHOOL CORNER
Works of Art?
Welcome back to the HS Corner!

Staying at home has led us all to explore different hobbies and come up with new ways of entertaining ourselves. One of the pastimes that has become popular across the internet is recreating famous works of art. Mrs. Lindsey, one of our guides, suggested that we try it ourselves, and we definitely laughed out loud several times while making them!

Click on the video to see our recreations!

Thank you for reading; we will be back next week!
