May 31, 2023

On Friday, May 19, surrounded by loved ones, classmates, guides and the spirit of the SCM community, Owen Uitenbroek graduated from St. Catherine's Montessori High School.

In his commencement address, Owen spoke about his Montessori experience, love for the St. Catherine's community, and his gratitude for the support he received during his years at SCM. After the ceremony, a reception was enjoyed by all and Owen silently walked the school labyrinth to complete his journey as a St. Catherine's student.

Owen will attend South Dakota Mines this fall. His major is geology, and he plans to obtain his master's degree in paleontology.

Transitions

As we conclude another school year, our children and adolescents have been preparing for the next steps in their journey at St. Catherine’s. The third-years had a special lunch together to memorialize their time together before moving up to Upper Elementary. The sixth-years celebrated their 6th Year Rite of Passage and spent time at the Japhet Campus with current 7th and 8th year students as they prepare to move up the Adolescent Community. The ninth-years celebrated their upcoming transition into the High School with a final breakfast with their AC guides and then spent time mingling with the High School students.

AC Portfolio Showcase

Last Thursday evening the Adolescent Community hosted their Portfolio Showcase. The event provided a platform for the adolescents to showcase their favorite works from this year. The gymnasium was transformed into a fair-like setting, adorned with colorful displays and interactive exhibits. Each student had their own designated space to present their portfolio, which gave attendees the opportunity to explore. Each work was a testament to the dedication, skill, and personal growth of the adolescents, encapsulating their unique academic journeys throughout this school year.

9th Years Travel to Costa Rica

Earlier this month our ninth-year students travelled to Costa Rica to participate in a week-long Spanish immersion and service experience. The experience was an eco-agriculture project located high in the mountains of Monteverde (outside of San Jose, Costa Rica) with a coffee cooperative. Students worked directly with a local coffee-farming community to support the families in their daily activities of planting and harvesting crops, creating a mural, and helping the community where needed. While in the coffee-farming community, students were housed with local families, immersing themselves in Spanish on a daily basis. To help pay for this experience, students engaged in fundraising efforts and were able to raise the funds to pay for two add-on activities: extreme zip-lining over the forest canopy and a night walk tour of the local biological refuge.
