COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS
Thursday Chat is Back!
After a brief hiatus during Virtual Conference days, Thursday Chat will resume on November 19 at 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Join us with your questions and insights as we discuss what it is like to transition to the next level at St. Catherine’s. We think this will be a great discussion, and have timed it to fall between our November Adolescent Community and High School Parent Education events and the Moving Up to Lower and Upper Elementary events scheduled for December.

We look forward to hearing your questions about what comes next, learning what surprised and delighted you when your children moved up, and facilitating a lively conversation between SCM parents of all levels. We hope you can join us on November 19!

A parent email with Zoom details is forthcoming.

INSIDE & OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
Infant Community Harvests Lemons
On a bright and sunny fall morning, the children in the Infant Community enjoyed a day of harvesting lemons from the lemon tree in their outdoor area. The children were able to see the fruits of their labor, literally. After watering and closely watching the lemons grow all semester, the children picked some and took them home; a great example of daily practical life lessons.

HIGH SCHOOL CORNER
How Do You Weave the Election into Every Class?
Welcome back to the High School Corner!

This week we are excited to share with you the work we did surrounding the election. Obviously, a presidential election is an important event and we wanted to give the race preceding it as well as the election itself due attention. This is where the High School truly shines.

We didn’t look at the election from one angle, we covered the election or at the very least some aspect of the election in almost every class. In Current Events we saw a presentation from Jacob on the history of presidential debates as well as an in-depth look at the first presidential debate of the 2020 presidential race. In Writer’s Workshop we took those same debates and picked them apart to look at the rhetoric at play. In Theology we discussed the importance of loving your neighbor and that this idea of the neighbor includes even the politicians we vehemently disagree with. However, the crowning jewel was our work in Humanities. We learned about the electoral college and the arguments for and against it. In Math Seminar we explored the Electoral College further by investigating the mathematical principles behind our electoral system.

For Election Day we did something extra special. We held a debate of our own. Our support or opposition of the topic we debated did not matter. What mattered was our ability to apply the lessons we had learned about rhetoric and debate to make the most convincing argument possible, and to open our minds to differing perspectives on issues. We, the writers of the High School Corner, debated whether to add justices to the Supreme Court and we came to the consensus that this was an incredibly fun and challenging way to celebrate Election Day.

Thank you for reading!
