FOUR PLANES OF DEVELOPMENT
"I have found that in his development, the child passes through certain phases, each of which has its own particular needs. The characteristics of each are so different that the passages from one phase to the other has been described by certain psychologists as 'rebirths'." - Maria Montessori

The four planes of development are the foundation of Maria Montessori’s educational method which divides human development from birth to age 24 into four age spans. It was through observation that Montessori recognized children develop the same universally around the world and have specific needs during these four periods. With these planes of development in mind, our guides take great care to prepare environments that will meet the child's needs and help them flourish.

REMEMBERING OUR FOUNDRESS
Sister Edna Ann
Sister Edna Ann, was a veteran first grade teacher of eleven years when she was first introduced to the Montessori approach, in 1963, by Sister Thomasine Evens, supervisor of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston diocesan school system.

Together, these two women read and discussed an article about the Montessori approach. Impacted by the ideas, Sister Edna Ann enrolled in a two year course of study to deepen her understanding. In 1966, Sister Edna Ann and Sister Paul Marie enrolled the first class of students at Dominican Montessori School, the first Catholic Montessori School in Houston. Today this school is known as St. Catherine’s Montessori.

Sister Edna Ann said of the Montessori approach:

"Montessori is a philosophy, not a method of education. It is a philosophy which recognized that children are guided by an inborn, natural process of growth and that, by removing the obstacles to this unfolding and answering the needs of the child as they arise, education should be an aid to life.”
COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS
Catholic High Schools College Night at Strake
Last week St. Catherine’s students in 9th-12th grade were invited to attend College Night 2021, an event co-hosted by the college counseling departments of St. Catherine’s and the other Houston-area Catholic high schools. Held at Strake Jesuit, the event included a dinner for the college representatives with the cafeteria tables decorated gala style. Thank you to the Adolescent Community for preparing its homemade soap as favors for the college representatives and for making beautiful floral centerpieces from its garden. The event is a great way for students to research the diversity of the college landscape by gathering materials and speaking directly to representatives from over 150 colleges and universities.

Samuel Garcia joined St. Catherine’s this past June as a Facilities Associate. You can see him all around campus doing anything from painting the hallways to swimming in the pond to ensure the fountain is kept clean.

Whatever the circumstance, he always does everything with a positive attitude. He continually pushes himself to do better. When asked about his favorite part of being at St. Catherine’s, he replied, “For the first time in my life, I feel like I am in my element.” St. Catherine’s is blessed to have Samuel as part of the community.
